And that shows that a '96 car was grossly overpriced.

Yeah okay I agree with that. I guess it's that the motor and chassis are so good that you have the option in my example to create two different machines that perform extremely well for their different intentions.

To OPs point for $100k and the margins Porsche gets on these cars I'd better get warm cookies in the service waiting room. Enough of this yesterday's donuts business.

Here's an appropriate song to listen to while you parse the car vs. options arguments over the Porsche 911:

I saw them in 1981 on the Parsdise Theatre tour. I'm old.

How much of this is affected by the rise of leasing? Consider how many cars are sold under promotion-based leases to lower the monthly cost for the buyer. That $120k car is now only $1500/month for a lease, which, if you had financed a car for 60 months, would only buy you ~$85k worth of car.

Porsche comes up with some $999/month lease promotion for unsold 911s every year. Well, now. I can afford $999/month, people say. The MSRP, to some degree, becomes irrelevant.

I paid more to lease my Spyder for less time. 24 months and costs $1700/month but I pay $1900 just because. For that money, I could have leased a well-equipped 911. But I don't view myself as the type that buys $140k cars. Yet I pay an amount commensurate with the cost of a lease for such a car.

The point is... Leases change the game and who can play. It makes buying a $100k car quite different than writing a check for $100K

I think that most would agree that a base 997, with nary an additional option, is still a very enjoyable car to drive. Adding options that are valued to you makes it more enjoyable, but I'd say not transformative.
this post from Quadcammer made me smile. My Targa does not have a single option...but I love it and look forward to every chance I get to drive it. My M5 is a much much nicer car in terms of 'luxury' but she sat in the barn from end of October to August without being driven.

The only thing from the list above that my car doesn't have is the sunroof delete option which would've been nice to have but not a deal breaker at all.

The 997.2 (late models at least), already have xenons and bluetooth so the only option on my car was the 19 inch wheels that I'm going to replace eventually anyways.

Below you can see my car's "superleggera" build sheet
Floor mats in matching color?!? Sounds pretty lux to me.

Seriously, that's the most minimalist build I can recall seeing. Kudos!

Shortly after the 993TT came out I ran into an old acquaintance driving one. He was never the kind of person to purchase such a car new and come to find out he didn't. Some doctor traded in his Mercedes coupe on a fully loaded 993TT, he hated it right out of the gate and traded it back in on a new Mercedes. That's how my friend picked it up so "fresh" on the used car lot.

He showed me the sticker which was well optioned at over $140k
