Cigarette lighter socket powers lighter but nothing else ?
Was traveling in my 997.2 the other day and I tried to use the compressor to fill a bike tire. Plugged in the air compressor to the lighter socket and it would not power on. I thought maybe I blew a fuse but I tried the lighter and it heats up red hot. Then I tried the compressor in the AUX power port in the passenger and that didn't work either ??? Swapped in a new fuse in the F8 position and still the compressor didn't work. I know the compressor works just fine in my Subaru. Any suggestions ??

The compressor's 12V plug may not go in deep enough into you car lighter and thus not making full contact for an adequate connection.
Sometime back I specifically had that issue with an in-car phone charger in my 5-Series BMW. Once I tried another charger that had a longer plug, the problem was solved.

If you have a voltmeter, put the selector on DC and place the RED lead on the center of the lighter socket and the BLACK lead on any exposed (non-painted) metal on the side of the socket.
If you don't have a voltmeter, you can get a relatively inexpensive but very useful one at Home Depot or similar.

I have a 997.1, and my owners manual says on pg 121, under Note on Operation - "The lighter receptacle should not be used for electrical accessories". Instead, there are two other sockets that are intended for accessories. One in the storage tray just aft of the cigarette lighter and one in the left footwell area for the front passenger. But, I do find the manual a bit confusing. On pg 208, it says "the tire filling compressor must be connected to the cigarette lighter". Let us know what works out.

Yes ! Took the whole socket out and in the bottom of the socket there is a wire that goes from one side of the center to the other. It is a fusable wire. Makes sense since the lighter is powered around the whole insert and inserts are powered halfway up the socket. Uncrimpted the fuse link from the socket then got a new piece out of a junk VW. Works great ! There is a YouTube on this so I can't take credit. I'll post the link tonight. Thanks everyone !
