Default Broken Clutch

So the clutch is bad DAM. I drove from work on Thursday and the clutch was good. On Friday morning I pressed in the clutch to back out of the garage and the clutch peddle felt funny and not in a good way. The clutch is slipping so I took it into the shop today. They got it apart and the disk is worn but still good. I broke a spring in the pressure plate. I have blown the center of a clutch disk, OK a lot of the in my old drag cars but I have never broken a pressure plate in 40 years driving a stick. So a new clutch is in the works and at least the flywheel is OK.

Good news on the flywheel. Consider replacing the RMS seal while in there, it tends to weep over time. And have the slave cylinder checked. It's easier to change it if needed while the trans is out. Chances are it's fine - just a labor savings if it's not.

Not sure what year your car is, but if a 997.1 with the larger IMS bearing, remove the bearing seal while the transmission is out to prolong the life of the bearing with splash lubrication.

Default Failed pressure plate

My pressure plate failed at 30,000 miles. Shop said known issue in the 997.1 ...mine was an 06 c4s
Secondly, yours is an 07, I would strongly suggest ignoring the above advice to monkey around with your IMS, imho

It looks good so I'm not touching the IMS seal as it looks good. I didn't know about the pressure plate failures.

OK, but just know that you're disregarding a recommendation made directly by Jake Raby & Tony Callas as I recently completed their 102 hands-on M96/M97 engine building class. Both my 997.1 C2Ss have the larger bearing and this is what they recommended that I do on my cars to ensure as long a life as possible of the bearing. With the seal in place, if oil penetrates it, it will eventually wash out the grease - then that seal will prevent adequate lubrication of the bearing causing failure.

Obviously, it's your car and motor and you can do what you like. If you choose to ignore their expert recommendation, that's your prerogative.

I was only thinking of replacement and not removing the seal it's coming out. the removing the seal only adds 2 hours labor as the flywheel needs to be removed and new flywheel bolts.

The quickest way to waste lots of money, is by trying to save a little bit.

That's what I always think also Jake. It's Travis shop at Pikes Peak Racing that is doing the work here in Colorado Springs. Great set of guys in that shop.

Great guy. I know him very well, and we've even worked together before :-)

My pressure plate cracked last week at 40K miles and felt like you described. Turns out there was plenty of life left on the clutch itself. Ended up replacing the clutch disk, pressure plate, slave cylinder, throw-out bearing, and the sleeve the TO bearing rides on.

I've been told the same thing by a reputable Indy.

I also had exact same thing happen two weeks ago. One day it was perfect. Next day pedal felt funny. Same issue with pressure plate. They showed me the two forks on the pressure plate that had failed. Replaced clutch, pressure plate, release bearing and flywheel. Dual mass flywheel is a wear item with the rubber gasket between surfaces so garage recommended replacement while they were in there even though it was not in awful shape. Clutch disc looked ok with maybe 60% wear but obviously replaced it. Mechanic wanted to replace flywheel with single mass performance flywheel but I couldn't pull the trigger on that. Out the door for $4,200.
