Went on a spirited drive with PCA this past Sunday in my 07 997S. Was pushing car in hot temps through canyons and oil temp hit 250+. Cooled back down once we hit straights and higher gears but never seen it that high. Was driving at higher RPM's (5-6500k) and air temp was in low-mid 90's so I'm sure that had a lot do with it. Running fresh Mobile 0-40. Any reason for concern?

Just fine. If you drive spiritedly, Motul 8100 Xcess 5W40 might be a better choice.

Check all radiators for debris. Check coolant. Check oil level. You need to eliminate all common variables, then move to more complex issues.

That being said, if the drive was very hard and it was hot, that might be a normal temp, but it is getting up towards track day temps.

My guess is that you were also following someone and probably pretty closely. That will rob the rads of fresh air and drive temps up too. Happens on the track and probably pretty common on PCA drives where you have a bunch of people parading through the twisties.

You guys are crazy. Let's not overthink this; 250 is normal under spirited driving. As to which oil is best for hotter temps...I stay out of those debates.

He said 250+, so I imagine over 250. I track my car in Savannah, GA. Air temps near 100, track temps 150 last June...did not reach 250. Agree the temp he is talking about is not dangerous, but he's concerned about it and I think these explanations should his mind at ease.

Running across 168 from Cali to Nevada last week in a spirited fashion, low gears, up and down twisties, 100F+ outside, air conditioning on full, I hit 235 and then 250 and a smidge. Cycled back and forth between those temps for 100 miles. Didn't like it, but drove another 3000 miles after that without hassle.

I've resigned myself to believe this is not a hassle. On the other hand, I will change the oil tomorrow night.

If your engine oil is 250+ and you have a PDK I wonder what the PDK and gear stack oil temps are?

What part was crazy? You check everything (this is called maintenance and routine if you're pushing things). Who doesn't check fluid levels and ensure the radiators are clear and what not?

If you mean discussing oil is crazy, then qualify your comment as being directed at that.

250+ degrees F on a really hot humid day engine stressed stop n go driving too - that can be within a range of 'normal'

question is - how much over 250? if it is approaching 275-280 or higher then imo it is definitely higher than normal... and the op should do some of the checks that have been suggested

good synthetic oil protects well up to 300 maybe somewhat over that figure, but 997.1 cooling system should not run nearly that hot if everything is healthy...

If you haven't already, consider getting a third center radiator. Kit is very affordable and it's an easy DIY.

from what I gather here, it is beneficial to get oil temp up in that zone or close, on occasion to evap the water contamination. I have been judiciously bringing temp up to 250 or just below every so often for this reason.

Great feedback. Was definitely pushing it, keeping revs high trying to keep up with 2 PDK 911s (mine's 6mt). Temp touched just bit over 250 but dropped quickly once we let off. I'll check everything as suggested but seems like everything's normal. Looking forward to another run soon. Back roads in SD County are great. Just wish CA had more $$ to maintain asphalt.

Just back from 3600+ miles in 8 days wherein oil reached 235F many times and 255F a few times.

Changed the oil tonight upon 25 mile return from work to warm it up. 5K miles on the oil. Still "looked" like new. 7.5 quarts out, 7.5 quarts in, same as the last 45K divided by 5K oil changes.

In other words, the higher temps seemed to have no affect.

CA has plenty of money to fix the roads from the gas tax fund, they just spend it elsewhere...
