Default Is red "too much"?

So I'm an old(er) guy, and I hate to be self conscious about stereo types that might apply to me, but I am. Looking for my perfect 997.2 C2/4 S cabrio. Focusing on more subdued colors like grey, black. Avoiding the "look at me" colors of white or red- although I like them. I want a Porsche for how it makes me feel, but not to get reactions from others. Is red a color that goes too far? I like it. There! I said it.

No problem here. I don't think I get any additional attention then if my car was Gray or Black. Now if the car was Orange or Green that would be a different story

Guards Red? Go for it.

I know a gentlemen of retired age who bought a black on black on black turbo, and while that is typically a scheme reserved for ''the youths'' (lol), he looks very hip.

A red Porsche is timeless.

It is just personal taste.

For me,

I would never buy a non-red Ferrari.
I would never buy a non-Silver Porsche.

Only Black leather for a Porsche.
Only Tan Leather for a Ferrari.

I came so close to pulling the trigger on a GTS in Delaware that was red.. but I backed out and got one in Meteor Grey. I felt it would have indeed been too much.

My suspicion was confirmed when I got a 981 Cayman loaner the next week.. in red. Tons of attention, people looking, trying to race. Had several domestic cars trying to involve me in races. I got my GTS back and its noticeably different. The attention it garners is night and day.

GR is definitely a classic Porsche color. 997.2s look great in red. That said, I think it will definitely get noticed more. The car itself, that is. I went from a GT Silver 997.2 C2S to a white GTS. While I never thought of white cars as being showy or flashy, I have noticed a lot more attention gets paid to the GTS. Don't know if it's because of the other GTS elements. The silver car was much more discreet, even with BBS LM-Rs. I now have a red car, too. It gets much more attention than the GTS, but it may be the car itself, too, which is much lower and "exotic" in appearance.

Hope this helps. IMO, red is beautiful, but yes, you will get stared at more. On the other hand, you will soon get used to the color, and just become desensitized to any additional attention. If you want more of a sleeper, go with silver/gray/black.

You're in LA? I get a few looks in my Guards Red 997.2S in our humble little burg, but I'm guessing that if you are living in L.A., you're not going to get much added attention. If you're heart says GR, go for it! Life's too short to not enjoy what you want, how you want it.

There are other reds that are "classier" such as my Ruby Red Metallic.

I never cared much for Porsche's Guards Red as I think it isn't red enough... too orange. When you see one up next to a Ferrari, you will see what I am talking about.

Peace

If you like it why should you care what others think or say!

I'm also an older guy (just turned 68 two weeks ago) and I certainly don't or didn't care what others thought when I purchased this pristine 2009 997.2 C2 in May of last year as a birthday present to myself... with my wife's blessing, of course!

So what are you waiting for? Go for it!

There is nothing wrong with the "reds", but you have to be 100% comfortable with that color, because is not something that you could easily change. If you have a doubt, there is not a doubt...

Red is a great classic colour for 911.

My wife agrees with you on your characterization of GR (although she likes the color). I've seen a few Carmine red Porsches (although I can't recall if any were 997s) and that is a very nice color…T

Funny, I was thinking the same thing when I first started looking for a 997. Not red, it's to much. However, I can't imagine having any other color, and every time I walk by my car - I just smile. If you like it, then go for it. This car is for you so get what you like.
