Car died & then got white smoke
1999 996, 125k.
I bought it in 2005 with 55k on it.
Just left my house, less than 2 miles, & my car died as I slowed for stoplight.
No noise or anything, just lost power, then died.
I started it back up to head back to my house, it died within 50 feet, so as it was coasting, I tried to start it by popping the clutch twice. It didn't restart.
As soon as I got it stopped, engine was not running, I noticed billows of white smoke coming from the back as I exited the car, 90% was from the right side.
The smoke was so thick coming out of the right tailpipe, I at first thought it was on fire. Mind you, the car was NOT running.
While on an incline as it was going on the wrecker, coolant started pouring out of the right side.
I am hoping it is the AOS.
Thoughts?
ETA: Just noticed this is not the 996 Forum, could the mods please move it.

Sorry to hear that. Sounds quite serious and I think it would be wise not to restart it again. Coolant coming from tailpipe usually means cracked head or cylinder...will see you in the 996 forum.

Car was flatbeded to my mechanic.
Coolant never spilled until car was put on incline.
Smoke was coming out of the tailpipe, the coolant appeared to be running off of the pipe leading to the tip
of the exhaust.

I went by the shop before coming in to work.
My mechanic will probably not even be able to look at it before the coming weekend, as I obviously didn't have an appointment, lol.
He is definitely concerned, but will investigate as soon as he can.

17 years and 70k worth of miles on a first gen 996.... even if its catastrophic you got your moneys worth!
Hope not that bad... good luck

I'm a major Chevy nut, while i totally dig (and might get) the LS's in a 944, I'd seriously like to drive a small block in a 911, I just "think" it would ruin it.....but, these are drivers cars....so, improvement? or ridiculousness?....

This is a hopefully premature, not to mention sacrilegious thought, but since alternate engines have been already mentioned in this thread, has anyone put a Subaru flat 6 as a replacement engine in a 996 or 997?

In all fairness to the V8. It fits, It's a lighter motor than the stock 6 and it can be made to produce stupid amounts of horsepower. Oh and it costs a third of a replacement 911 motor.
