Getting them into an apartment, & paying for her divorce has me spread pretty thin financially, lol.
Between that, & not being too mechanically inclined, I am considering selling it as a roller at the moment.
Of course I don't want to.

Sorry to hear your tough situation in life. I can imagine. Unfortunately there are really not many "economical" solution for these motors. They are just expensive to rebuild correctly.
Regarding rebuild motors, IMHO the best is of course Jake's bored engine but it comes at a cost. The next best is RND (stock displacement), which is plug-and-play, ready to be installed. A ton of stuff on the motor are new and very little is reused.
Why don't you start a thread in the 996 forum. I know you've asked the mod to move this thread but it hasn't happened so far.

BTW, maybe wishful thinking but if it's just a cracked head (e.g., the notorious cylinder #1 crack) and no cylinder damage, it can be repaired.
Can you at least confirm with the shop?
They can check visually by looking into the cylinder #1 spark plug hole.

Come to the 996 forum, man. You'll get a lot more support and opinion there.

Looks like "Ben Z" has an RND engine so you can ask him for feedback if you want.

I understand one gets what they pay for, but I don't think I can pay ~$19,000, plus labor, plus other incidentals it might require to get my car back on the road.
Sounds like I am SOL, & back to trying to do something with it as a roller.
I sure have enjoyed it, just wish I could enjoy it longer.

The guy who purchased my 2000 Boxster S roller installed a salvage engine. All in, I think he said it was about $8-$9K to be done and running again. Somehow he knew, or his indy knew, the provenance of the engine. He has been tracking this car for around 4-5 years now and very happy with it.
Salvage can work.
BTW, I got $3300 for it, the dismantlers like DC Automotive offered me $3000 with pick up included. I heard others getting a bit more for 911s.
Peace
