Default I thought my computer was totally freaking out.

Ok. So my first 'oh ****' moment with my Porsche was not too bad. I turned the key and it couldn't turn the engine over once. Everything shutdown for a second then the center display ran through errors like "PSM failure", "PASM failure", "PCM initialization failure". I tried to trickle charge the battery but the error messages persisted and the car wouldn't start.

I had to push it out of the garage and get it towed to the dealer since it's under warranty.

It ended up just being the battery. From the dealer not so cheap but better than the disaster i thought it was

z.s.

The dealer (stealer) charged me $400 for a new battery installed.
Never again! Will do it myself next time. Found myself at dealer with dead batery. I just wanted to drive my car away, so I paid them.

Ouch, I replaced mine last winter for $150 and less than half an hour of my time.

That's just wrong.

Did you hook up anything to keep your settings?

No, I don't recall having to set anything.

You will often have to retrain the Windows and if the car is earlier then 2003 (02?) you will need the radio code. If you have electronic throttle you might also have the do throttle adaption routine.

Same thing happened to me. Couple of poor starts, a couple of jump starts and long charges. I knew it was the battery. Off to Walmart $129. Figured it was worth the attempt.
New battery, Al the lights went away. Fabergé car up and running as designed.
BMW wanted $472 for my X5. 10 year old and I installed that in ten minute too.
No time for a beer.

Mine died suddenly last year after 6 years, crazy lights flashing and warnings. I took my wife's X5 to the dealer just before closing, got the battery they recommended, Interestate I think, for $195, came home and installed it - took no time. There were some things to reset like the windows and other warnings - there's a good guide somewhere I found by Googling - pretty sure it is on rennlist.

I remember my 2009 E92 they wanted $600 to replace the battery. $400 for battery and $200 for resetting of software.....$150 for me to do it including the cable for software reset.

Does the 997 need any electronic resetting to indicate a fresh battery like BMWs?

They can.
Especially if you have random lights on .... Like air bag.

I'm not impressed with PASM failure messages when the real issue is a dead battery. Surely the electrical system could be better designed.

The 911 freaks out with a low battery. It's weird.

I had an E92 (2008). Had to do a battery reset too. Walmart battery and reset it using cable from my Evolve tune. I haven't heard that the 997 needs the same type of reset.

Default dongle

I got an OBD to WiFi dongle - ELM327 thingy. I should be able to reset codes in the future. Details of my experiences with the dongle and apps will be in another post.
