![Question](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/icons/icon5.gif)
I was driving home in my 40k mile '06 C2S and my shifter went limp when shifting into 5th. Admittedly, my shift into 5th was more aggressive than usual but damnit it is a sportscar...
Anyhow, from my search of the the forum it seems like a broken shift cable but I have some related questions:
- How much does the cable replacement usually cost?
- Is this a good time to switch to a short shift kit.
- Any recommendations on an OEM vs aftermarket shift kit?
- Is this a good time to do the IMS fix?
Much appreciated!

I used the Numeric cables and shifter, its very sturdy. The OEM cables once you see them are surprisingly thin and a bit frail looking, its all plastic and nylon. Looks like thicker fishing line.

Absolutely is this a good time to switch to a short shift kit. The labor to replace the shifter overlaps about 80% with the cable replacement so doing both at the same time makes sense. Popular choices are Porsche 997, Porsche GT3 and Numeric. There are other vendors too. The cable can also be upgraded to the version used in Porsche cup cars or an aftermarket version.
No it's not for two reasons. (1) The shifter cable replacement will be done without dropping the engine or transmission (good news). (2) The car is a 2006 C2S which has the latest, larger and more reliable IMS bearing which unfortunately is not serviceable. The only way to upgrade it with an aftermarket version is to disassemble the engine.

I'd first find out what the problem is before finding repair solutions. Otherwise, it's just wasted effort.
Pop off your shifter boot to see if you can see anything obvious like the plastic connector dislocating.
It may be the shifter cable since failure is not uncommon but it's better to be sure. By your 'limp' description.. sounds like it may be in the shifter itself.

I run Numeric shifter and cables and they are fantastic. A vast improvement over stock. But having said that...
It's likely the cable linkage popped out of the transmission fitting. This is common and is a super quick and easy fix. Under $50 and 10 mins of labor can likely get you up and running again.
So decide if this is really a justification for an upgrade (of course it is!) or if you simply want to get the shift mechanism working properly once again.

Thanks for the comprehensive answers - The Numeric Shifter cables seem like the go to choice.
I'll take a quick look below the shift boot to see if there's anything I can remedy before I have the car flatbedded.

O/P - Nothing wrong with the original system. If worn, it will break.
If you were happy with the function. Replace what you had.
It worked great on your ten year old car. Once repaired it should last another 10.
If you looking to improve the action, as above, lots of great advice.
