I just bore scoped my 997.2 S with 54K miles on the car that has a little known history of maintenance. My concern was triggered by large carbon deposited in the exhaust ports. So far I have only looked at two cylinders as the other four were too near TDC for my scope to see much. The rear wheels are off of the floor so I am thinking of hitting the starter briefly with the plugs out to get BDC on different cylinders (any problem doing this?). The plugs on this car looked as if they were the original plugs with layers of deposits, the center electrode was black with carbon, the ground electrodes were well rounded off. I have included a few photos of the two cylinders that I was able to scope. These were the rearmost bores on each bank. It seems obvious to me that the scoring, the straight scratches or grooves in the cylinder walls and on piston skirts could only be caused by grit or hard particles such as carbon chunks or bits of metal scuffed off from the engines metal parts. Wear from piston skirt against cylinder wall should be smooth and uniform, not scratches or grooves. Would not dirty oil be the cause of bore scoring?

Cylinder bore scoring (997.2).
Sorry that the attachments did not attach. I will try again. I went out to do more bore scoping and did not get a chance to read the forum's best way comment to rotate the crank. A quick burst of the starter allowed viewing the bores of the other four cylinders. You can identify the latter photos by the fuel sheen on the piston tops. I am hoping that all the oil sheen was not washed off of the cylinder walls. Anyway I am not seeing any clear cut evidence of scoring. In only one photo does a short vertical (parallel to cylinder) line appear. You can see a lot of reflections off of the cylinder walls and they seem to have a uniform grey surface. The piston tops seem heavily encrusted with carbon. One photo near the end shows what appears to be blobs of oil on the wall of the cylinder and the edge of the piston looks strange. So anyway it would be great to get all your comments and impressions. I was totally impressed with the quality little borescope that I got on Amazon for $109.00. It is a Teslong digital borescope with a 3 or4 foot fiber optic cable. It is basically a digital camera with the fiber optics. Now I will have to borescope everything. It seems that my Porsche does not have scored cylinders.

Taken my engine (2005, 3.8S, 135,000 kms) apart a few weeks ago.
Had beginning scoring in cil 4, 5 and 6, see picture.
The pistons are all reusable, was in time!
Will replace Lokasil by cast iron bushes (external compagny) and place new piston rings.
The cooling has allready been improved!

Complete engine replacement for cylinder #6 being scored and the valve guides being out of tolerance and not sold separate from the heads- new short block and new heads direct from Germany, low temp thermostat, water pump, alternator, cam solenoids, chains, tensioners, guides, all new seals o-rings and gaskets. Replaced bolts where needed. Had them put in a new clutch, pp, slave, tb, and slave while they were in there. I drove it for ~30 miles from the dealer, no issues felt great. Have the new motor # sticker and official stamp in the owners manual. Charged me 2 hours of labor for the clutch and slave- prob took them 15 mins cause they had to swap clutches anyway (only really had to bleed the slave) but it would have been dumb not to do it.
Full Parts list- no labor- My receipt just shows N/C (no charge) so these prices are just from google looking for genuine parts-

Holy sh**t!!! Pretty much a new car. That engine is perty. I bet you feel good about having Fidelity! I am debating on getting one. Mine is a 2006 C2S with 80k miles. No issues. Bores scoped a month ago during oil change. No score sign.
