I'd do it if it were an equivalent model or a model upgrade. I hopped in a 991 S and it felt a little less special than my 997 GTS, so on that one I'd likely just stay put. But I'd love a 991 GT3 if I could add rear seats, and if I get a race car first I'd take a turbo/TTS for a DD.

I'll probably go new and keep it for a long while the next time around, and I don't expect to be financially ready to do that for two to three years. At that point the 991 would be almost finished, so I'd consider just waiting to see the next platform.

 

There are six new 2015 911s in various trim levels for sale at one of my local dealers. They are available at significant discounts, as you'd expect. These cars are quite tempting....

 

In a couple of years. Many great buys were available in late 2015. The GTS 991 is just stunning.

 

When I was shopping for a 911, used 991's were in the mid to high $90k's. Now you can find reasonably optioned ones starting in the upper $70k's. Give it another year and they will drop even more when the 991.2's flood the market.

 

I hate to say it but it doesn't work for me. It's the size of a bus.

It's funny recently I started getting the itch. I have looked at every type of car I can think of. From mini coopers to cl63 Benz coupes to maseratis. Nothing, not one damn car does anything for me that makes me even remotely want to get rid of my car. So I come back to 911's. I look at newer 997 cars as I just flat out do not like the 991's at all.

For me there are three things I truly just dislike about the 991. The center console between the front seats. Looks great in a pany not in a 911. Too much whiz, bang for me. I like a simpler analog car.

2. I detest the side view mirrors stuck on the side of the door. Looked good in the 60s-80s. It's 2016. The side mirrors on the 997 are where they belong they are just wrong on the 991.

And the absolute travesty about the 991 is that they cut into the rear hips with the spoiler. On every model since the original 356 and 911 the rear engine lid has been rectangular and the lines along the side ran towards the tail lights in a straight line. In The 991 they hacked right into the rear fenders. Makes me want to punch some one right in the *****.

And don't even get me started on all of them going turbo or a farking GT3 with only PDK. If I wanted that I would just hop on the Audi/bmw bandwagon. I like a screamy high raving naturally aspirated car.
There is no question for me that a 997 GT3 car will be in my future in the next few years. Hopefully they won't go stooooopid high in price but that's as new as I am going in the 911 line.

I haven't noticed the mirrors but yes, I do not like the new spoilers. You've described it perfectly as in that they just cut into the rear fenders... don't like the look. I actually like the center console but I concede that it is very, very busy.

No interest in the 991 at all. Not an improvement, in ways that matter to me.

 

From the responses I am guessing the key factor is where someone prefers to be on the Sports car >>> GT spectrum.

Those who want more "lux" and more features / tech would opt for the 991. Those who want less of those and prefer hydraulic steering / greater simplicity, opt for the 997. The other factor is looks but I guess that is subjective (though I strongly, strongly fall in the camp that favors the 997, .1 or .2, looks).

Performance is incredibly close. ~10 - 15 secs on the Nurburgring for the Carreras, and around 0.1 secs in 0 - 60 times, based on the 15hp difference is miniscule. Tire choice and driver ability would be much bigger factors.

I am in the camp that would pick a 993 over a 991, and (like-for-like) would probably also opt for a 993 over a 997 EXCEPT that I personally use my car for longer trips sometimes too, so admit that my bias for my particular situation is a bit more towards GT (unfortunately).

One thing I can completely understand is for those with another more extreme sports car (GT3 etc) then if looking more for a DD sports car, maybe the 991 starts to look more appealing. Though I can't personally see myself making the tradeoff on looks, feel, simplicity, when I can already do long trips in comfort with my 997...

 

The 997 is all the Porsche I would ever need. If it gets to the point where it's too expensive to operate daily I will start looking around but I will be looking at ALL the cars, not just 991. Really love the RS7 and Panamera. Looking forward to Jaguar dropping the Supercharged V8 into the XE. The 911 has too many drawbacks for me to seriously consider a new one again for a DD but I wouldn't rule it out, love the 997 but at some point it will definitely be too risky as a DD (risk of breakdown).
