Update. I've had the updated V1 back for a few months now. I postponed updating the thread until I had used it several times. We have a couple fixed radar units around here (speed limit signs with radars that tell you how fast you're going relative to the limit). Based on those signs and my memory of where the V1 used to pick up the constant and predictable radar signal, I can see very little degradation in the sensitivity of the updated unit when it picks up police radars.

In addition, there are a couple of regular drives that I make where I am familiar with the false signals that the V1 used to pick up. Driving through those areas, the unit is much more quiet but still seems to be able to pick up police radar when it is present. Yes, there are still alarms that I know are false, but the falses are far fewer. Driving through most places where the unit would false a lot, I would say that the updates have cut probably 75-80% of the false alarms while still being able to differentiate between doors and police radar.

The best side effect of the update is that false alarms on the highway from other cars' collision avoidance systems has dropped almost to zero.

And yes, when you get an update now, they send it back with the filters on. I'd say it was worth the price of the update.

Thanks for the update Iceter. I have a V1 sitting in its box ready to be sent back or sold but based upon your experience I'll probably keep it and get it updated. My Volvo has an accident avoidance built in and the laser was going off every few seconds on the V1 so I never installed it. Do you still get false laser alerts?

Yes but less than I did with the old unit. Sometimes I just want to shut off the laser as it seems to have a bad night every once in while, but then I go for months with nary a beep. The biggest weakness of this unit is the false laser alarms.

See Valentine's response to false laser alarms here: http://www.valentine1.com/Lab/AnsweredAlready7.asp

I have my unit plugged in and mounted on my windshield virtually 100% of the time.

Marine Blue, I haven't noticed a change in the laser falsing, but I never had a big issue with that before. I pick up a false laser every once in a while, but not so frequently as to be annoying. I am aware of two specific places in my regular driving where I get a false laser alert and I've grown accustomed to them. The weird thing about one of them is that it's in the middle of a stretch of woods out in the middle of nowhere. I can't, for the life of me, figure out what is sending out a laser signal in that location.

I choose to leave the laser detection on because of the infrequent falses that I get, but I could probably turn it off since very, very few police agencies in NC have laser. It's probably a much more important notification for you in California.

Thanks for the link, Bruce. That's a very interesting explanation they gave. I'll have to look around to see what vehicles are near me next time I get a laser alert.
