997.2 to an M4

I'm not sure I understand the BMW thing, I went to the auction to buy my wife a new car and looked at at least 100 assorted bmw models but could not find one straight car. they just seem to fall apart. I just delivered a 135I Convertible for one customer and it's Ok, but it is not the quality or the looks of a Porsche. I will give it an A for electronics. This is just my opinion and I'm happy for anyone who likes them.

If you are willing to overlook the whole engine rods thing, the E92 M3 is a blast! (ok, that was a pun) But seriously, a well kept 2013 model will have all the tech you may need and that V8 is just symphony, especially when paired with the right exhaust.
I personally don't get the I6 turbo in the M4. I drove it 3 times since I was seriously considering it and the engine is a big let down. Very close second on the let down list was the steering. Best kept in comfy mode even for track use (are they fkin serious???). If you haven't yet, watch Clalrkson take it for a spin.

I just went from an E46 M3 to a 997C2S. I was originally thinking E92 6MT then ultimately get a 911. My buddy got an E92 and I drove it and it just felt too heavy for me, and for some reason didn't feel a lot faster (even though it is) probably because of the wt. Then we started to see the M4 pictures and I thought it was a pretty design. As more facts came out (I6 turbo, electric steering, and worst of all, its size!!!! yes, it got much lighter, but it is 4 full inches longer than the E92. Its was going RS5 big, which is the wrong direction for me). Then we started getting info on the M2 and I was thinking maybe that would be the next step. AS info came out that it would be the same wt and ONLY 365HP (vs 425 in the M4), along with the turbo motor and not as pretty lines of the M4, I then said, "screw it, I have always wanted a 911, I only have one kid at home and we have 3 cars, maybe a good condition 997 was within my price range at this point". Sure enough, they were within reach and cheaper than I thought.
Even though the lines on the M4 look good, there is just no denying that it is based on a Sedan and compromises are made in the look of the vehicle when it is based on a 3/4 series. Sure they add vents and scoops and wheels to make it look more aggressive, but it still isn't a design like the 911, where they design the car from scratch to look exactly how they want it. not based on putting 4 adults in there, not based on a $30,000 entry level vehicle, it is built from the ground up and there is something so gratifying and simplistic and beautiful about the 911. You look at it and you don't have to talk yourself into liking it, it is already a work of art. I can't say that about a lot of cars. Maybe a 360 modena and a few Aston Martins, but then the list stops about there. I look at the Lexus RCF, and many of the gimmicky designs we are seeing now with the i3, i8, Nissan Maxima, most of the Lexus line, etc.... and wonder what the hell people see in those designs and how is this becoming "attractive" to people. Lexus took the GTR and Audi grill and basterdized the hell out of it, and now I see absolutely no beauty in those cars.
I will always like and respect the M3/4 as well as the M2, but my 997 feels way more connected to the road than my E46 M3 (yes, I still have it, just listed it for sale). I will always love my E46, but it isn't a 911.

Call me dense or whatever but I don't get all these BMW discussions here lately. As if they're just that close to a 911 in every aspect that it's hard to decide. I've owned two E46 M3's and while I loved both of them, they're sporty, high performance sedans that have little in common with the overall driving experience of a 911 imo. Completely different cars. No seat time in later M series cars but I doubt it would change my mind.

I only have two questions:
Troll?
Or joke?
Edit: Sorry. 5 posts. Troll. Nevermind.

My thoughts:
BMW didn't keep up with the whole firm but forgiving suspension philosophy.
They've slapped the M badge on anything that moves.
Two of my best friends are BMW service managers. They will, without a doubt, tell you: DO NOT BUY A BMW. Lease one for a couple of years and no more, just to satisfy your temporary curiosity.

Buy it. They are attractive cars that perform well. They drive differently than 911s but since you're bored with your 997, it's time for a change.
Don't listen to people who claim that just because you want a change means you don't appreciate your 911.
911s are far from all that

As a direct comparison to the 911, I would go with the M2. Good luck getting your hands on one though. It is a smaller, lighter, smaller feeling car.
I am a fan of the BMW brand and have owned every M3 except the latest. I currently also have a X5d and a NineT (motorcycle). I think they make great cars but the current M3/M4 is a bit of a miss for me. Interested in the M2 though (although they only make it in a black interior which is a deal breaker for me).
