Not a fan of the cab's, but I do like open air driving, so I bought a Targa.
I'm in Socal, and I see lots of cabs around, and they always have the top up. What a shame. Beautiful weather, and this guy (or girl), has a convertible, but leaves the top up. Why bother?
The Targa is just so easy to slide the roof back and open all the windows. Just a few seconds, so there's no excuse.
Coupe for the track and a cab for nearly everywhere else.
I had a C6 Z06 which was only produced as a coupe. Loved the performance, but missed the top down driving through the winding farmland roads near Lancaster, PA, or the mountain drives in VA or W VA, or driving down through the Keys in Florida, etc. Listening to the exhaust sound when shifting over 5K RPMs with the top down is intoxicating, especially when driving under an overpass.
Coupe drivers who never experienced top down driving just wouldn't understand. Sports cars are convertibles.
Just picked up my 80-year old mother last night to bring her for dinner. Drove ~10 miles on the highway, in New Jersey, in my '09 997TT, with the cab top DOWN! She loved it.
Her hair was barely tussled. The temps were moderate enough, and heated seats, side windows and rear wind screen made everything more than tolerable.
I'm sorry, but there are just too many days when having a cab makes the driving all it should be. And yes, hate is way too strong a word.
The deal breaker on a 997 cab for me was the angle of the rear seats. We drive our 2 kids around in ours all the time and in order to have space for the top to fold down, the rear seat seatbacks aren't just verticle, they're actually canted forward, which would be extremely uncomfortable for them and make it really hard to fit car seats back there.
I like the looks of the coupe better as well - you just can't recreate the proper curve in the rear window corner with a cab. Don't love the Targas for thsi reason as well since they bring that corner to a a point instead of a curve.
Being an ex-motorcyclist and boater, I like the wind as well, so I drive a 928 Spyder on those perfect days.
I miss the top down driving of my S2000, but the 911 coupe looks so much better than the cab version (to me) that I couldn't get a 911 cab. I can see a targa in my future though.
There are a lot of good looking 997 cabs out there, I just like the coupe better.
Why hate convertibles or targas or whatever? If you do not like a convertible, get a coupe. And why tell the world?!?
I agree... What a silly post... I have a cab and love it, but even I think the line of the coupe are better -- so what, I wanted a cab specifically because I wanted to drive top down in the summer with my wife and kids. Wtf is wrong with that? It's just so utterly vacuous and meaningless to say "I hate cabs".
Thing about the interwebz is everyone gets to say whatever pops in their mind, I suppose... Sigh...
Coupes are for ugly people. Don't forget the 20% tint.
Good one, getting strange looks from my coworkers because I'm laughing a bit too loud this morning.
Cabs are not bald people friendly either. I once rented a non-Porsche convertible while on business on the west coast in late winter/early spring. Drove down the PCH from LA to San Diego, lots of fun. Came back to the midwest with a sun burnt, bright red upper forehead from my receding hairline. I looked ridiculous at the time.
Dude. Have exactly the opposite view. For the life of me, I don't understand how anyone could spend the kind of money a 911 costs and NOT have the option of taking down the top. I just don't get it.
Like someone said earlier-- driving a cab is pure joy. Sun and wind is happiness.
And I *LOVE* the look of them.
Too worried about getting your hair messed up maybe?
Apparently it is, from all the cab's I see around here on beautiful days with the top up.
I actually see the same thing in Colorado quite a bit, and it always makes me wonder why the driver bought a cabriolet. So, I understand what you're saying.
I put the top down in my cabriolet every time I get a chance.
EDIT: Thinking about this a little bit more, I realized that there are some times when I drive with the top up on a nice day. It's not often, but it happens. It might be that I'm driving to a business meeting in a suit and I don't feel like applying sun block. It might be that I need to make a call in the car and I need it to be quiet. In any case, the beauty of the cabriolet is that I can choose. If I want a quiet car that feels very close to a coupe inside, then I drive with the top up. If I want the sun and the wind in my face, then I drive with the top down. It's the ability to choose that makes it so nice.
I always just thought the coupes were for people who could not afford the cabriolets and I always felt a little bad for them. They spend the money to get a Porsche but cold not afford the best one.
