997.1 TT or 997.2 GTS?
Hi all,
I realize this is totally subjective, but wanted to solicit your subjective opinions.
I'm considering a 997.1TT or 997.2GTS. I have a 964 that I really enjoy, so I'm looking as a compliment to that. I'm leaning toward the 997TT because I've never owned a turbo and the GT nature of the car is appealing, along with the mezger engine history.
This said, the RWD wide body and purity of the GTS is really attractive. The pricing is about the same, but the GTS will be 3/4 years newer with half the miles.
Anyone here own both? Anyone have strong opinion about either one?
Thanks Guys,
Tim

I haven't driven a 997 turbo (I have driven 996 turbo and other turbo cars) but I would choose the GTS. The turbo power is unreal but when would ever really use it? The RWD GTS cars are the best of the best in my opinion with the wide body and RWD - with a 6speed its practically a perfect car.
And remember, the GTS has as much HP as a 993 turbo!
Of course, go drive them both and enjoy whichever you choose!

Damn, the turbo pulls like a train... just pulls you forward relentlessly.
Which is exactly why I took it off my list.
I actually decided the GTS was the Flat6 experience and the 911 experienced heightened to just the right level for casual use, but couldn't get the math to work, but that's where I see the sweet spot: 997.2 GTS
Anyway, I like rowing and keeping the revs up. I love the N/A engines. BUT... if you're getting that fix somewhere else (964), damn, I can see a turbo fitting in.

Seems to me you already have a 964 so why get another (newer, better) one when you can get a Turbo? That way you have two very different models, instead of one that's really just a more evolved/developed version of the other. But a lot depends on driving. If you like to do weekend or longer vacation drives then I would think that alone would tip the scales way over towards the Turbo.
Another thing you are hopefully already considering, is the way the collector value of the 964 affects its use. If you find yourself only driving it in special conditions, then you want to be happy driving the GTS or Turbo all those other times.

The mezger engines are bullet proof. If you can live with turbo lag, go for the turbo. The GTS has newer technology (bt, touch screen, nav, etc) and NA engine, but not as fast as the turbo.
I say test drive both and get a feel for them before you make your decision.

You kinda answer some of the questions in your post, Turbo has history and heritage Mezger engine, it prolly depreciate less than GTS. The only thing better in the GTS is PCM 3 but it is dated compare to today technology. I used to owned 997S, but currently driving a Turbo and loving it more and more. However, 997 GTS is a special car, it is reliable and prolly retain values better than regular 997. Tough choice but 997.1TT with exhaust, suspension upgrade, and a tune is a beast and nothing quite like it out there. Good luck

I'm biased clearly but I went through the exact same conundrum when making my decision. I went with the GTS because I'd never use the power living in a big city and I like to track my car and RWD is more enjoyable in that respect.
But you already have a 964, and as Chuck said, you basically already have a great NA RWD 911. If you get a GTS, you essentially are picking two overlapping car when comparing to a more complimentary turbo. Again, we're just comparing these three cars to one another. I say the similarities between a 964 and GTS are closer than a 964 and turbo. Just keep that in mind. Cheers.

That's the pair I was considering too - and a cheaper 997.1S too I guess. I have a Ducati for speed and wanted to daily the car, so choosing the GTS was pretty easy.
If the two are complementary and you'll be driving both I would lean towards the turbo for more differentiation. On the other hand, if you're looking to do daily driver duty with it and will drive the 964 on weekends only or similar, I would could see you being happy either way for the obvious different reasons.

I went from a 996TT to a GTS. There wasn't an onramp I didn't love with the Turbo That being said, I just didn't like the Turbo sound. It sounded the same from 3500-6000rpm in my opinion. The GTS with the PSE sounds a thousand times better. I know this isn't a driving characteristic, but part of the overall equation for me.

Agreed. I had both and it's nice to able to use all the power of the GTS. Newer tech is also a major plus.

If I may add to this, I think most would agree on the merits of the Mezger engine in the Turbo. If you are a gear head and the way things work influence your decision, then the Mezger in the Turbo may even be more attractive if you compare it to the DFI engine in the GTS and it's particular issues (carbon buildup, etc. discussed extensively in threads in the past).
