No, I am not bashing the magnet, I do like owning it. But I got to wonder what the heck I would do if I found chunks in there?

Mine does this and every stickshift BMW I owned did it also. Had several Toyotas, a Mazda RX7 and a Volvo and none of them did it. My '75 Plymouth 3-on-the-tree didn't either.
I changed to PTX a few months ago and it didn't make a whit of difference.
Usually shifting into second and then up into 1st works. Forcing the lever does not! However it's hard to remember and resist and when you're at a green light with a line of cars behind you honking.

Yes, I had the same thought when my mechanic suggested it.
He'd already put the plug in at that point. Probably another way of scraping a few bucks from customers.. like the unnecessary $50 wiper blade changes the dealership used to do!

I have a plug and did many oil changes with it. What did I see? OMG... you're not going to believe this...... no kidding..... hold on to your piston...... this is not for the paranoid..... nothing. I saw nothing. I get a tiny film of "grease" which I suspect are oil and super-fine metal particulates.

+1 on the Mobilube PTX
It is made specially for this problem. I don't think you will solve it with just any oil..
Look at the thread started by Bruce. No hesitation. Fixed it for me as for many others
