What is the order of your priorities? Sound quality? Navigation? Connectivity? User interface? Processor speed? Each has different strengths and weaknesses. I had a Kenwood unit in my 996, and it was quite good. Think about your priorities and do a little research. Things to think about include: Touch screen or not? ***** vs. buttons. Speakers, amps and how deep you want to go down the rabbit hole.
Good luck and have fun searching!

I like those new Apple Car Play units. If I were replacing my head unit, I'd go with one of those along with one of those Porsche custom bezels that makes it all look factory. However, I don't know all the details about Car Play. I suppose if you forget your phone, you lose a lot of functionality....

I bought one of these in the summer of '14 - Kenwood DNN991HD. The main point for me was it has Garmin GPS an interface that I already know. I have a custom bezel so it looks stock. They may have a new head unit by now though.
I like the idea of a unit that replicates one's phone though. Probably a couple of years away from that being perfected though.

I'm getting a new system as we speak...
Decided to suck it up and go for the whole shebang:
Kenwood 6902s with CarPlay
Hybrid-Technologies 3-way door speakers and custom sub
back-up camera
V1 custom install

I bought an Android head unit for my '08 Touareg. I really love it, no problems at all with it. When it came to replace the radio in my Boxster I decided to try and go the same route. First I tried a Kenwood unit. Compared to the Android units there was no comparison for me. I couldn't see the screen on the KW unit with the top down, it had Garmin for GPS and you couldn't add any apps. So I went for a Chinese Android unit (4.4.4) I upgraded all the speakers at the same time.
I know they are selling a unit now for the 997 that's under $550.00 shipped and is plug and play on fleabay. I think that it is for 997.1 only, I don't think there is a unit for 997.2. On my boxster I bought the plain unit for 399 and made my own faceplate. Dollar for dollar I found the Android units would give you twice as much for 1/2 the price. You can get a front camera DVR for around $20.00 too. The support that I got from both sellers in China was unbelievable, I was really surprised but be warned there is a 12 hour or so time difference. There is a really good forum for the Chinese head units where I found boatloads of good info. www.xda-developers.com
Good luck with whatever option you decide to go with.

Pioneer Nex head units. Pioneer makes great HU's for SQ audiophile sound system builds or for replacing oem to upgrade to all the new tech e.g. Bluetooth, nav/gps, Apple car play, android auto, etc. IMO Pioneer HU's are the best in those aspects. You can google it and see reviews. There are also plenty of sound system forums.

997 S stereo upgrade-update-upload
Just got 'er back from the stereo place. Early comments:
Beautiful installation amp and crossovers in frunk where stock stuff was mounted, so looks stock. Sounds pretty good to very good (I'm a bit of an audiophile at home and have gotten used to electrostatic speakers (Innersound). Head unit is what I expected (I wanted real **** for volume). Back-up cam is a plus at the college where I teach. Adding a second 6.5 Hybrid-Audio woofer, then cover the box in carpet. Valentine is great so far; I like the remote display. I really like the Car Play feature. Unlike the 964, this one has high spousal acceptance factor and may become a DD (life is short).]
