after a few hours, the light turned green, so i think it is good to go. Battery only needed a few more hours. I have never had a problem with starting the car, so this may all be overkill, but feels good to have it done. thanks for all the help.

Talk about a jinx! One day fine, the next day nada! I reckon it was a 7 year old battery (based on the build date) so I did OK, and thank goodness it was in the garage when it died.
