$100 for 996 spare tire... $700 for 997?
It would be great to have a space saver spare tire that I could put in the front trunk of my MY05 C2 on the rare occasion that I drive far from home. I see lots of cheap spares for the 996 on ebay. I gather these must be incompatible with the 997 hence the $700 price tag for a 997 spare. What have you found out?
I realize that transporting a flat 305/25-20 inside the car will be a problem. Keeping the car on the road/getting to a tire shop is the first priority.

Check with your insurance company. I have State Farm and have towing included for next to nothing. Another alternative would be to look at a 986 spare. I just picked up a 986 with a blown motor and I am going to see if the spare will work in my 997.2 frunk.

I have a Boxster spare for my 997.1S. Had it test fitted, does fine with my spacers. It does take up room in the frunk but I can still get a fair amount of soft luggage in. Got it off eBay for about 200 bucks. Probably the same item as the 996 spare.

$200 for the tire alone or did it come as a kit with wrench and jack? Do you happen to have the part number?

You can also look at 944 space savers which are much cheaper. The bolt pattern should be the same but you'll need to check the offset, you may need spacers. You should have a compressor in your frunk now so that shouldn't be an issue. The 944 spare is much thicker if I recall (than the 986/996) so you would lose most of the space in your frunk. If you go this route you should check the 944 boards. They are selling for $65 to $95 on flea bay, you might be able to get one for $50 from someone who is parting a 944 out, maybe even local, I always see 944 rollers on crags list and I am sure someone would be happy to pull out the spare. Remember to get the tool kit and jack as well.

I have both the factory spare kit I got from Suncoast ( http://www.suncoastparts.com/product/997STK.html) and also another no-collapsing spare (not as wide) that I got off ebay - maybe the 996 or Boxster tire. They both work fine so it's a matter of how much truck space you want to give up - the non-collapsing tire is narrower, but taller so has to sit at an angle - I carry the factory tire currently.
I do have some spare bits like a jack and tool set that I don't need and will be glad to sell if anyone needs that - or you can probably find them on eBay too.
For those who suggest towing - just know what you are into. If you are near a Porsche dealer or a very good tire shop, you may be fine. If you are hundreds of miles from either, which is easy to do, then you will be in for such an ordeal that a spare will forever more be in your frunk. Ask me how I know.

I just drove to Key West and back. My rear left tire exploded on the turnpike at about 85mph. Luckily I was 26 miles from Braman Porsche of Palm Beach had it towed there that night and they put on a new rear set of Michelin PS2 (no PSS until December) the next morning. It wasn't cheap, i'm now putting a 300 mile cap on roadtrips, just too stressful when stuff goes wrong - spare wouldn't hurt.

So... those who have actually used the spare:
The blown front or rear tire/wheel will fit into the car?
I guess the flat rear can be squeezed into the car... even with a passenger??

Having just bought a set of wheels and moved them, you can easily fit 2 tires in the 911. One on passenger seat, one on the back parcel. If you tilt the rear tire so it is wedged up on the rear shelf you even get good leg room in the front.
Carry a large trash bag.

That's good to know. I intend to get a spare over the winter for some two-passenger road trips. As long as the tire/wheel fits in the back, that seals the deal for me.
