Default Footwell Lighting Intensity

Is there a way to turn on the footwell lighting while driving but turn the intensity down low?

Short answer, no.
The footwell lights are connected to the overhead dome light. Unless you want to do some wiring (or duct tape over the dome light), you'll need all those lights on in order to also have the footwell lights on.
Unless there is something I do not know that someone else will chime in with, I think you're out of luck.

Do you find it distracting or something? I don't think I've ever really noticed it while driving.

I didn't even know the footwell lights came on while driving. I thought they only turned on when you had the doors or the dome lights on.

That's because they don't come on unless you turn on the dome light and I doubt that you drive down the road at night with the dome light on. The OP was asking if there was a way to turn on the footwell lighting while driving without the dome lights being on.

I guess I was hopeful that my 997 footwell lighting worked like the Cayenne, Q7 or Touareg where you can adjust the footwell lighting at the perfect light intensity so you can see to your feet at night. For example if someone like your lady were to drop something at her feet. Can she easily see it and pick it up while the car is in motion.
Yes nwGTS: My lady commented that my new GTS did not have the same great feature my Touareg has.

I think I understand by the responses that the 997 footwell lighting is only controlled on and off by the dome light switch and has no dimming capabilities via the PCM, or Central Information Gage Display. I was hoping this dimming feature I like so much in my other vehicles was an option I could add to my GTS. Maybe it is something the dealer can code if all the modules are there. I believe I am missing the comfort package which adds this feature. Any one have the comfort package on a GTS? I think 18 way seats & comfort package includes this light intensity option.
Cheers
