Just starting my search for the Castrol Optimol Paste TA required for mounting the centerlocks on my GTS. Looked online but couldn't find anything, including Gaudin and Pelican Parts. I placed inquiries into two dealers, but as it's Sunday don't expect a reply for a day or two.
I found Optimol Paste T (not TA) on eBay by a seller in the UK. T = TA or not?
Anyone have a source, especially in the SF Bay Area?
Ended buying a tube from the dealer. Tried searching the internet for different sources. Dealer was the fastest and price was a little better than www.
I have a Carrera 4 GTS and was looking for a tube of Castrol Optimol Paste TA. I went to my local Porsche dealer who ordered the correct sku for Optimol Paste TA but Molub-Alloy Paste TA was delivered from the Porsche parts warehouse in Atlanta. I informed the dealer of the apparent mis-pick and another tube of Optimol was ordered. Same thing again, Molub-Alloy Paste TA was delivered.
The Parts Manager inquired with the Porsche parts warehouse and was told that Molub-Alloy is now what is being used for center locks and has the same sku # as Optimol had.
Has anyone else encountered this? My concern is that when you go to the Castrol website, Optimol is clearly a different product than Molub-Alloy and there's no indication from Castrol that Optimal is being replaced by Molub-Alloy.
I too have a '12 C4 GTS and ordered the Castrol stuff from Suncoast a month ago. That's precisely what I received. Not sure why you would get something different.
The problem is that the Molub has zinc in it and the Optimol did not. One is not a direct replacement for the other as they are chemically different.
I suspect the original reason for the Optimol was it had no zinc and they feared galvanic corrosion between the steel nut and the aluminum wheel. Zinc plus moisture corrodes aluminum. (Nickel is bad too)
Castrol changed the formula in Europe at least a year ago.
Loctite Silver Grade appears to be zinc free.
It would be nice if PCNA simply told us what the spec for the anti-seize was as there are dozens of versions available (even aerospace grade) here at vastly reduced cost.
For what it's worth, one dealer told me they use McLube Sailkote (000-043-300-35) instead. It is, needless to say, totally different.
Thanks for the information on the zinc component on Optimol vs. Molub-Alloy.
After I posted my question, I called Suncoast and I asked to check to see if they had Optimol in stock. I was told that they have five units and he would walk back to the bin and put eyes on it. He came back to the phone and stated that he had one tube of Optimol and four tubes of Molub-Alloy. All five tubes had the same sku # on the sticker from the Porsche warehouse. This coincides with what my local Porsche dealer was telling me in that Porsche is now shipping Molub-Alloy under the previous sku # for Optimol.
The problem is that the Molub has zinc in it and the Optimol did not. One is not a direct replacement for the other as they are chemically different.
I just spent a bit of time pulling the Castrol data sheets and the MSDS sheets for these two products. The data sheet for Molub-Alloy Paste TA states that it was previously named Optimol Paste TA and that the name was changed in 2015. The details of the data are virtually identical.
More relevant to the comment above are the MSDS sheets which show that both products (really one product with two names) have identical zinc sulfide and zinc powder components.
Looks to me as though they are the same, as Porsche thinks.
