Default Steering wheel exchange

My 2008 Carrera S cab has a natural red leather interior with sports seats, etc.
Unfortunately it was ordered with a thicker multifunction steering wheel with the triangular shaped air bag.
I would like to replace this rather unattractive wheel with the standard Carrera S round airbag wheel.
Will the car need reprogramming after such a change?
Thanks

Tons of threads on this but...

For a 997.1 (2008) car the only round airbag option was the Sport XPA steering wheel.

Other non-standard options in the year 2015 include upgrading to the 997.2 steering wheel with round airbag. The XPA round airbag and the 997.2 airbags are different. I don't think you'll need to reprogram. You just need all the right parts.

Actually there are two steering wheels with the round airbag for the 997.1 - one is the standard sport steering wheel (standard on the S) and the second was the Sport XPA steering wheel - both are available from Suncoast and other vendors...and both can be installed without any programming.

Cool, didn't realize that.

997.1 has one style of round airbag
997.2 has one style of round airbag.

Once you have the airbag, you can pick whatever wheel you like and the associated parts.

Thanks for the helpful comments.
Interestingly the 2009 997.2 uses the same sport wheel as the 997.1
Today I ordered the XPA sport wheel in natural Carrera red leather.
Anyone interested in purchasing my thicker red leather multifunctional
Wheel with airbag?
Car has only 2800 miles and the wheel appears unused.

Is that the "rather unattractive wheel " that was "unfortunately" ordered with the car that you are trying to sell? Picture please?

Private sales of steering wheels with airbags can involve a lot of work. Airbag requires special shipping and handling since it is considered "hazardous material". Maybe when you get your new wheel and airbag you can re-use the packaging used for the airbag - save it.

The wheel is in fact the described wheel that will be replaced.
Not my favorite but may work for someone.
My best plan will be to save it with the car.
Thanks again

Someone might buy the wheel separately to use as a core exchange for a custom wheel. Good luck.

I likely will keep it as it is original to the car. Suncoast tells me that although the red airbag will arrive shortly, the wheel may take up to
3-5 months.
Thanks for all of the comments

My car 2009 .2 was also ordered with the multifunction wheel so I have the .1 triangular style. Don't like it but I'm not going to replace it since it is original but I sure wish the car had been specced with the sport wheel...

3-5 months? Why not get a customized wheel from Dallas or DCT instead? They build on OEM Porsche core wheels. Much quicker delivery, built to your specs and less expensive.

You design the wheel and they build it. You can get regular leather, perforated leather, alcantara or a combination of those. You can also specify color, thickness, molding, flat or round bottom, deviated stitching and colored stripe at the top. I'm sure there's more you can do but those are probably the most common items.

I've bought two from Dallas Custom. The craftsmanship is excellent and I personally think the quality of the leather is better than stock. They typically ask for a core exchange which cuts the price in half but I bought one without an exchange and it was still less than a stock wheel from Suncoast. Some people freak out about anything that doesn't come from the factory but again.....these are built on OEM cores so all they do is improve on what you're holding in your hands. I will never have a stock steering wheel in a Porsche again.

Thanks for all of the info
Are we sure that reprogramming won't be required?
Remember that I will be exchanging a multifunction wheel for a wheel without multifunction capacity.
