Default Changed the oil, 9 qts, one bar down from top?

So I changed the oil yesterday, including filter. Put in 8.5 quarts, drove it, got it hot and the gauge was at one bar above minimal. Added the last half quart, a total of 9 qts. Drove it again for 25 minutes, got oil up to 200F for a while. Checked it again, 2 bars above minimal out of 3. Drove it again the next day for 30 minutes, again the same 2 bars above minimal. Do I need 9.5 quarts? The manual says 9 quarts. Oh yeah I have the 997.1 S 3.8L.

I always run 1 bar down from top.
I did overfill once with 9+ qts and had to drain some out.
Just be careful not to overfill.

Frankly I don't trust that bar graph thing further than I can throw it. What was wrong with a dipstick, other than people are too lazy or too afraid of a little grime to use it?

We don't have one! HA! We only have the electronic read out. Mines a 2007 S. No dipstick, wish it did have one!

Anywhere within the acceptable range is fine - no need to risk overfilling it.

From what I have heard, the bars on the display cover just the top 1 quart. So... as long as you are somewhere in that window, you should be fine.

Each "bar" is about .3 of a quart. I leave it one from the top to avoid "overfilling".

Sounds good. Just checking. I guess I was assuming that if I put in the recommended amount, it would be at the top, so recommended amount is actually one bar from the top. Good information to know, at least with my car.

That last line from the top where you can see that 1/2 segment empty is "Full". If the gauge reads completely full, that's overfull, which is bad. I add 8 quarts which gets me into the gauge range, usually have to add another 1/2 qt to get to that last line, but I do that over the next couple days in 1/4 qt. Increments using morning readings since they can move around a little bit. I believe each main section of the gauge is 0.4 quarts.

Quick Reply: Changed the oil, 9 qts, one bar down from top?
