Well, when you pay attention to your surroundings you will definitely know when someone wants to race. Hard to miss the pulling up beside the car and downshifting, pulling in front and gunning it, or revving at a stop.

Maybe it doesn't happen to you. Might be a regional thing too.

If I feel someone at a stop light wants to race me I roll down the window and compliment them on their car. That usually makes them smile and we both motor off calmly. The last time I got excited by first gear in a car was my '57 Chevy. Now I enjoy 3rd and 4th far more. I almost ran over a guy on a bike years ago...he went down, broke the bike but escaped with just scrapes and some road rash. After that I just kept it on the track. Now a night a week at a karting track keeps me happy.

In general I don't get many stop-light challenges either, maybe just one or two a year. I would have expected more with my Sharkwerks/PSE combo and wing. I guess that's a good thing though. The last one that was safe to engage was a Mustang though, most of the time I'll just decline due to the conditions not being safe. He was quickly left behind by several car lengths and I let off before getting very fast. Several seconds later he must have felt good as his persistence paid off and he flew on by while I was coasting along (I certainly don't want to sucker some poor Mustang kid into getting in over his head).

I've also observed what I'm going to refer to as the vacuum effect. If I'm driving faster than the general sub speed limit flow on a multi-lane highway and working the lanes a little, I seem to pick up other various sporty, and some less sporty, cars that feel like they too have to go just as fast or faster but were previously going slow enough that I passed them. Since I'm always in favor of having a rabbit, I'm glad to let them by to show me how they are truly superior.

This morning, it was a Jeep Grand Cherokee that I could see working hard to catch after I easily passed him and another half dozen cars doing the brain-dead Prius follow-the-leader thing in the left lane (just like S4Alex mentioned earlier) when the rightmost of the three lanes was wide open.

Nobody ever calls out my 911. I think most folks assume my blacked-out GT3-look 911 makes 2-3 times the horsepower it really makes. The more informed Porsche owners know a bit more about how much power the various cars make, but they are more inclined to shoot the breeze than race.

I get more compliments on my 911; I got far more race challenges when I had the Boxster (I think the WRX and Evo kids feel much more confident racing a Boxster).

I'm always amazed at the lack of knowledge "car guys" have about Porsches...they usually get so wrapped around the "Is it a 911, or is it a Carrera" question that racing never comes up.

Guy in a black Chrysler 300 pulls up beside me at the lights and yells out "I RACE FOR CASH"
I couldn't believe what I just heard. So I fire back at him "Are you kidding me? - It's time to get yourself a real job!"
The lights turn green and he does a quarter mile run through a school zone. - Tsk Tsk Tsk

Let's keep it Classy out there guys!

All Volkswagen drivers. Jetta, CC, Passat, or Golf, doesn't matter. Not sure why. Are Volkswagen drivers a "little off"?

as for me, this never happens...ever, either 997TT or 993TT. No one wants to race and i like it that way.

As of two days ago.....a Kia Soul. Why, I have no idea.

In all seriousness, I don't get a lot of challenges and I'm OK with that. Usually the people that want a little spirited driving are on the freeway and driving Porsche's also.

Thankfully I've not had any issues with this behavior. Or I'm so focused on enjoying my drive I ignore any yahoo trying to get me to do something stupid on public streets.

Oh wait...one time...going into Denver I ended up side by side with a Gallardo at a stop light. Blasted through a couple of gears together and then both backed off with a thumbs up.

Sometimes (particularly at night) I'll get a CHP or other LEO right up my bumper and kind of pushing, but I never take the bait.

If I'm doing 72 and the cops come up quick I just move over, but quite often they, just hang behind me in whatever lane I'm in, and push my personal space button for a while.

I figure they probably just like the smell of them high flow cats...

IMO there are plenty of 911s that would absolutely embarrass most Mustangs in a straight line... but that's just me.. I am a Porsche guy

I have found in a little over a year that rather than people wanting to race, most worrisome are people who are tooling along at or below the speed limit and then all of a sudden take umbrage when you try to pass them, and then speed up to make it more difficult to pass them. This is especially obnoxious when it happens on two-lane roads. I wonder about the mentality of such people. If they hang me out to dry in oncoming traffic, is there some prize or satisfaction they will derive if they cause a serious traffic accident?

As for being on the streets, the responses have been overwhelmingly positive - thumbs up, a couple rolled down their windows to say "nice car," the flashing lights to/from other Porsche owners, etc….T
