Why don't we drive our cars more?

Nice to hear so many are using their cars. I can understand if a PO in Boston left the car in the garage this winter. My orginal post was brought about by many other posts here and by Porsche's own statement about average mileage Porsche's are now driven. And that may in part be because so many new Porsches are leased instead of bought. And the lessor has no investment in long term care for the car. They can play musical Porsche's trading them in every three years and getting the next one.

I bought my current '06 about 5 months ago...It only had 6600 miles on it when I got it...I have been averaging 400 miles/month so far, but that is because I've been preparing the car to my liking and it has been available to drive less than 4 of the past 5 months. After I finish the interior I expect to average 600 miles/month. I drive it anytime I can, except for short rush hour commutes and family hauling duties.

i avg 5k miles a year in the 911
car is driven about 7-8 months a year and is stored during winter... for work i need my suv and i dont take the 911 for small things (ie going to the bank, coffee runs etc etc).
i try to ensure that my route includes a decent run on the highway when taking the 911... i do TRY to drive it as much as possible however.

I think you'll find many of the rennlisters are actually outliers in terms of mileage. Many folks who are not enthusiasts probably drive down the average significantly, no pun intended.
At least in my area, I am one of the only ones driving a 911 during the winter. But all of a sudden, after Memorial Day, they all come out of hibernation and become almost commonplace.

It's not unexpected for the thread to be full of guys who drive their P cars daily. However most of the guys that post are driving higher mileage atmospheric cars that really have little actual monetary value, so why not drive them. My TT is a 2008 with 17k on the clock. I'm not saying I'm holding my breath that it'll ever be worth anything and in reality Id rather never part with it. I like most people have other cars to drive. I just sold my DD which was a Bentley GT with 103k on the clock when it went. We also have a Ferrari FF that has 47k. For DD Id just rather drive my truck they are much easier to turn over once they reach milage maturity. And I don't get pissed when I scratch the seat with my knife clip..

Well I've been guilty of the "nah it's raining excuse", but mostly it's my 25 Mi 1 way commute thru ATL interstate stop & go at prime traffic hours.
1st to second to 1st over & over all AM or PM isn't good for me or "her"
Plush I have a left side handicap & I hv to think to run the gears so mine's a funtime car weekends & some late PM's

My car is a weekend driver. I normally drive my 911 every day that I have off. My daily driver gets so trashed from the commute. Damaged windshield, paint, headlamps, etc. I could never even think of driving my Porsche 32 miles each way with the gravel, potholes, salt, pickups and heavy vehicles dropping all kinds of junk or simply crazy drivers out there.
I store my car in winter ( wash, oil change, cover) but drive it if the temp is 40F, and the roads are clean and dry. This past winter was a bummer, though. The last window for me to drive was toward the end of December. Ahh but spring weather is almost here. The next rain storm should clean up the roads and the potholes will begin to get filled. Let the weekend drives begin.

I drive mine every day all year but I still only put avg 6500 mi/yr on it. My office is 7 mi from the house and I don't go anywhere during the day. Never been a fan of joyriding, definitely not these days with $4/gal gas. Piling on the miles just wears out tires and mechanics quicker, and drives down the resale value. If I have somewhere to go I go, otherwise I'm happy just to look at it.

The only time I don't drive it is if I have to do a home visit - I don't feel comfortable driving it up to a client's house - even if its not worth much anymore people make the assumption that it's expensive.

Because taking the train is faster.
I don't have to pay for parking or gas, either.
I drive maybe once or twice a week, mostly to court appearances for clients.

I am what many would undoubtedly consider the worst owner my 911 has had to date. Simply because I USE IT.
It's my daily driver. I take it wherever I want to go. Rain doesn't matter. Pollen doesn't matter. Ice doesn't matter.
I drink in it. I eat in it. Well, snacks on roadtrips and such. I'm not driving down the road peeling shrimp and eating corn on the cob!
I even let other people drive it. I remember the first time I rode in a Porsche when I was 15 (a 1978 924). I VIVIDLY remember the first time I drove a Porsche when I was 16 (a 1977 911 S). If I can be a part of someone else experiencing either of those moments then I am thankful for the opportunity.
My wife has been shocked when someone else driving it, potential accidents, grinding gears, etc. come up and I say "It's only a car." (I think I really shocked her when I said that to her when she had a bit of gear grinding going on when trying to drive it the first time.)
Don't get me wrong, I consider a Porsche to be something special and don't abuse it, but I don't think it's the kind of special I should keep locked away for Sunday drives with only me behind the wheel.

My work is 3 miles from my house. It would be stupid to drive the Porsche there and then leave it in the Las Vegas sun all day on a dirt parking lot. I have a little Ford Ranger that works perfect for that. I also have a couple of other cars and a couple of motorcycles that I drive for fun so the Porsche pretty much only gets used for longer trips. I love driving it when I do and I like looking at it in the garage when I don't. When ever its driven it feels like a special occasion and thats fine by me.
