Upgrading your Porsche 997.1 to the 997.2 LED look
Hello everybody , i would like to upgrade my 997.1 to the 997.2 Led Look.
I know there are two options :
First the cheaper solution , buy 2 Dectane Taillights .
Then if i want the real upgrade to get the 997.2 look i have to buy any items
1 rear Porsche bumper, 2 Genuine Porsche Taillights , 1 rear control unit,
where i can find a cheap kit like this if i want to upgrade ?
perahps buy a second hand porsche 997.2 rear bumper on ebay and then but the Porsche taillights new and the rear control unit new ?
thks for your replies

You get what you pay for. If you aren't going to use OEM parts be prepared to spend a good amount in prep and fitment work. Not to mention aftermarket stuff is not the same quality in materials or craftsmanship. I swapped my 997.1 gt3 to 997.2 gt3 cup oem body work (bumpers, front fenders and flares, front wheel liners, radiator air ducts, 997.2 tails, GTC fog light inserts, deck lid etc etc). If you are patient you can find OEM parts used for good prices.
If you are going to do something do it right or don't do it at all. Going the cheap route, you will pay at some point.

I've seen a few members this or the other forum who converted 997.1 to 997.2 bumpers and lights.
IMO, it's not worth doing just the rear bumper (with taillights) conversion. It "cheapens" the car and makes it look weird with a .1 front with .2 rear. The Dectane taillights will make the .1 look very good already for a much lower price.
I installed the .1 LED fog and taillights upgrade initially. Then when I installed a full bodykit a few months ago I decided to convert to .2 OEM lights for both front and tail at the same time.

I think it is lame to convert lights and bumpers to 997.2 and I don't think it's worth the trouble.
Further to all this, I prefer the look of the 997.1 lights better anyway. It's the last 911 with old school lamps that give it a different charm. Also one of the few 4S models with no light bar across the rear. The LEDs on the front of the 997.1 Turbo bother me and seem out of place.
What I did is replaced front and rear amber bulbs with led bulbs to get the more noticeable blinking. Actually I used red in the rear signals.

I mean, when do you ever see your rear end? LOL. But seriously, for that much money I'd spend it on interior upgrades that I see and use while in the car.

Interesting to know that you can upgrade the wide bodies to the 997.2 Red Strip rear end.

u will also need the
- 2 gloss black exhaust trims
- if your car is a widebody and u get the 997.2 wide body bumper there will be 2 plastic pieces for the sides of the underbody of the bumper as well, the nb rear bumper you wont need the extra plastic peices
- some conversion threads will say you will need to buy hte 997.2 center mounting bar as well but u can just remove the 997.1 off the car, drill 2 holes and use the existing one.
make sure you get the proper rear bumper (wide vs narrowbody).
you euro guys are lucky to get the clean euro rear bumpers without the bumperettes. the nort american conversions will also require new bumperettes as well (997.1 wont work for the non-turbo conversions)
i would do both front and rear conversions, lemme know if you need help with anything.

Personally, I don't get why people do this - it doesn't fool anyone, and you are likely messing up the long-term value of your car. (Kind of like the 60 year old ladies who get facelifts and hair extensions.) It always seems that cars that have had some "modernization" features done just sell for a lot less, or need much longer exposure time. If you do this, at least keep all your original parts so you can revert in the future. Just my 2 bits, good luck!
