WOW is often the reaction from driving a dual clutch transmission the first time. That said, I dearly regretted getting the dual clutch and not the stick shift on my DD just 2 years after taking ownership.

When re entering the Porsche world a couple years ago you couldn't pry that manual stick out of my hand. Lol. Good joke there.

Anyway, is a 911 with an auto (PDK) not really a 911? Sure it is. But much of the visceral experience is lost without that 3rd pedal. I can be happy with either but after driving the 991 with the PDK I was hooked.

If I lived out in the back country, retired and didn't live in Los Angeles I'd own a 7 sp. 991 but the PDK is that good. How good? If you go into it eyes wide open it grows on you.

And if you think the PDK is great in the 997.2, just drive a 991 PDK. It's even more amazing.

I've only had mine for 2 weeks (2012 GTS), but have found that Sports mode is the right way for me to enjoy PDK - both while in traffic as well as highway driving. Sans Sports, it felt really sluggish in traffic. With Sports mode on, PASM off, the entire personality of the car seems to change.

I like the PDK because I have it. But I really like it because my car has it. And I like my car. I am sure if my car had the MT then that is what I would like. Frankly, if it is a 911, life is good. I've always shifted. I miss the clutch, and I don't. How can you go wrong with two winners to choose from?

To each their own. I'm with those who don't think the 991 PDK is an improvement. Too soft and more like an old fashioned automatic. At least the one I drove. It sort of rolled over from one gear to the next instead of snapping through the gears like the .2 version. I'm talking about manual/sport plus now since that's where I spend most of my time.

If smooth, seamless and almost limousine like is what's desired then I agree that the 991 PDK is an improvement. Just not what I want in a 911.

I test drove a beautiful silver 997.2 Carrera S with PDK and a full leather (red) interior before I bought the base 997.2 Carrera in my avatar. The car had tons of options, Carrera S II wheels and was a great find, until I drove it. I hated the PDK. I'd rather have a PDK than a tiptronic, but I didn't find it fun to drive at all. It also felt a bit "clunky" on certain downshifts when coming to a stop. I also thought it was quite boring actually. I recognize that it's faster than a manual and convenient, but I wouldn't buy one unless I had no other option. That day may come, but not as long as a manual is still offered.

Love it or hate it, you better get used to it.

Anyone who thinks the stick shift 911 of any sort will be around in 5 years believes in the tooth fairy. Porsche has made that abundantly clear.

So is this going to possibly make the later model sticks potentially more "collectible" than a PDK equivalent? I'm buying this car for my enjoyment, not collecting. But I do tend to keep my cars for a long time. I still have the '73 MGB that I bought right before I got married in '83. It's worth more to me than it is to the market.

Selectively per model and in years to come, the short answer is yes, IMHO.

The rarer the model, the more value will be given to the manual transmissions. You're already seeing the bump in prices for late model Turbos and GT3's with sticks. Hell, look at the Sportomatic and Tiptronic values versus their counterparts of old.

Manuals are obsolete (but preferable to some of us). Just like discontinued air cooled 911's, the stick is destined to be more desirable in years to come. Many, many years, in some cases.

You need (well only if you really want to experience) a superior PDK, you need to spend more seat time in a 991. There isn't anything limousine about it. A 991 PDK with Chrono. It feels light years ahead of the 997.2 car in every single way it shifts. Auto or manual. There's a reason the 991 C2S posts faster lap times than a 997 GT3. And I'm a 997 lover. Especially in the looks dept. It (991) took two full years to begin to grow on me.
