PDK=WOW!
I've been looking for only 997 cabs with a stick. Stopped by a dealer today and drove a nice used '99 coupe with a PDK. WOW! That thing was nice! Am I missing something? I may have to change my search to PDK cabs?!

To each his own...I love the stick cause I'm not in bumper to bumper traffic everyday and I believe in the old school stick shift. Have heard that PDK has come a long way from it's predecessor and Porsche itself have eliminated stick shift from their Turbo models for a reason.

There are two definite schools of thought on the PDK. I was firmly in the "old school," having driven nothing but three-pedal Porsches all my life.
When I ordered my 2011 GTS four years ago, I decided to "check" the PDK box on the option sheet. I am now a happy member of the "new school."
Driving the streets/freeways of L.A., the PDK is better choice for me, and that's really the essence of the transmission decision...whatever is right for you.
I do wish the "old school" diehards would lighten up on the "real sports cars have manual transmissions" chant. It's simply not true. Not anymore.

"Anymore" is the operative word but I'm open, it's just a preference. I'm even open to new 4 cylinder Turbo-charged Porsche engines

Truly love PDK. Have another fun car with three pedals so I can have my cake and it it too. If and when I get a new(er) Porsche it will definately be PDK though. Just perfect and absolutely a must if you ever drive in trafic jams or rush hour trafic. A must then.

The pdk is absolutely faster than a 6 speed on the track. I remember an old interview with Robert Kubica (before his accident). It was about traction control in F1. He said any racer will want to go faster, so he was in support of any technology that results in going faster. Now Senna was the other school. Technology reduced the impact of talent.
If the car was a track rat, I would go with pdk. It is faster and more consistent. But for my street car, I like the higher connection to the car with a manual.
my 2 cents

I enjoyed the VW version of PDK, DSG. Certainly not as upmarket sophisticated as the latest Porsche version, but it works very much the same. From the beginning it was obvious that it was a quicker solution to manual shifting and using a manual clutch. On the track it has proven itself for years in F1, WRC, and most serious forms of auto racing. And it is wonderful in stop and go traffic. At the same time, I began to miss the interaction with the car...I missed feeling like the pilot. And I missed the pleasure of executing a great downshift...standing on the brakes and double clutching while dropping down from 4th to 2nd and then squeezing on the gas and being 100% in charge of how I was going to shift to the next gear. PDK is absolute state of the art...and sometimes that isn't what I want...sometimes I want to feel that I am state of the art.
