Default Need some help diagnosing a problem

'06 C2Cab, manual transmission. Out for a Sunday drive, everything seems normal. Exiting off the interstate, shifting out of 6th, things feel weird like no engagement in the gears. Get stopped but can't get into 1st but seems to be in 3rd. I get it rolling by getting on the throttle to where I can pull over at at gas station.

Car is stuck in gear, shifter feels 'rubbery.' Ideas? Yes, I'm going to call a flat-bed.

Something similar happened to me in my 03 Turbo. Turned out the shift linkage broke where the shifter connects to the linkage at the transmission.

So my diagnosis would have to be your car's shifter linkage is broken.

Do not try to nurse the car anywhere in 3rd by slipping the clutch. Just park the car and call for a flat bed tow truck.

My car's shifter was covered by a warranty, but it is not an expensive repair even if one has to pay for it out of his pocket.

You risk burning up the clutch.

Unless you happened to stop the car at the mechanic you want to fix the shifter, the answer is yes, it will hurt the car, specifically the clutch, if you try to get the car to a mechanic.

A shifter is nothing compared to replacing a clutch.

Call the tow truck. This is why you should have premium auto club membership.

Since the car is stuck in gear, I'm a bit concerned on how to get it on the truck.

Just like changing gears. Push the clutch pedal down.

Any locals can speak about Freed Performance? Since I'm sitting a few miles from their shop, that's where I'm going to tow it.

Actually, once you posted I thought to myself, snap out of it you dummy. Mind is just going a 100 miles a minute waiting on the tow.

I think the shifter cable is the culprit, the shifter has zero resistance to it and it will only go up/down with no side to side.

Kudos to the tow-truck guy pretty surprised I was jovial about this situation. Will have to wait with what the verdict is from the mechanic.

I would take this opportunity to upgrade to the numeric cables. They have metal ends rather than the factory plastic bits. I'm pretty sure they can be used with the stock shifter but check with them. Or get their shifter as well and enjoy it everytime you row through the gears.

I agree, now is the time to do it. Question though, reading here and other sites the 'cup' modeled cables they have; is there increased noise from them? Like some have posted in the past, these factory cables seems to not be as robust as they *should* so I really only want to fix this once.

I'll call Numeric tomorrow and see what my options are.

I had the same thing happen.

Jacked up the car and worked from the ground.

Found both cables dethatched.

Slide then back to where they belong.

$2.49 Zip Ties.

Zip Tie them tight!!!!!!

Secured the cables with Zip Ties and the 911 is shifting like new...... !!!!!!
