Default Installed New Coils and plugs Today...

Hey all, installed new plugs and coils today on my 2006 C2S. I was actually dreading it but found it pretty easy. I didn't remove anything other than the covers over the coils. It took me about three hours with plenty of cleaning underneath and taking my time. I did it on jackstands and have a pretty decent assortment of tools. My only issue was with the right bank, cylinder three (if numbered like air cooled VW). It's difficult to get a socket and ratchet short enough to remove the top socket screw on the coil. I ended up heating and bending an allen type wrench (T-40) into a shorter "L" shape for the confined space. It feels good doing it yourself and saving a trip to the dealership also! Oh bye the way, Thanks USMC_DS1 for the DIY, very, very useful!!!

I've gotta get a compact 3/8 or 1/4 drive torque wrench though!

Oh, forgot to mention my car has about 50K miles on it (no symptoms/ problems to elicit repair other than it had never been done). I'll probably catch the water pump next and thereafter the RMS when I have more time off, its beginning to weep a wee bit at the trans/engine junction.

I've been wanting to DIY this along with an oil change and all filters. Did you find a DIY guide for this? All I have found is one for the turbo.

Wow, you did it without muffler removal! I couldn't even get the heat shields off without taking the mufflers off! My fix for the right rear top coil screw was to grind a small, half-moon notch in the top of the muffler bracket. I was then able to easily use a long torx screwdriver to do the coil screw. Of course this only works with the mufflers off.

Good Job!

Would a thumb ratchet been any use in that situation?

WC11, probably not due to the length of the T40 socket plus thickness of ratchet. The key tools were a cheap little Titan 1/4" drive micro ratchet I bought on a whim from Advance autoparts
and the other tool I used was the T40 from the all in one set (removed from the handle portion for use)I bent 90 degrees (as pictured). As to running better, It seems to start after fewer revolutions and find/settle on idle RPM's faster. Possibly my imagination though. I"feel" like it made a difference.

I'm thinking about this myself.

Do you have a Link to the plugs and coils you bought?

I usually get my parts from Sonnen or SunCoast. Sonnen was a little cheaper and quicker/closer this time!

Ordering part #1 gets you both coil parts and it is likely less expensive. Then plugs, yep 6 each...

i just paid to have the stealership do this (ok, ok, actually a compression test was my main goal but even if i wasnt getting that, i probably still would have thrown $ at the problem...much better than THROWING the swear jar which i guarantee is what would have happened. )
