Default What color is my car?

This sounds silly/funny. But how do I know what color is my car?

For over a year, I always thought it was "meteor grey" but I just realized this is an assumption. Might be a different shade. I looked through all the paperwork I can find from the purchase, and the color is not mentioned. I tried decoding the VIN but it doesn't seem like the color is in there.

Any tips?

I think there should be a sticker label with option codes, that includes the paint code, usually in the front under your hood. If you find that label, take a picture of it, someone on here should be able to tell you.

You'll have a paint code on your car as Cosmos stated.

Unless it's a PTS car and looking at a different thread where you posted pictures it's probably a stock color so it's going to be:

M7W/9Q Meteor Gray Metallic
M7X/E7 Atlas Gray Metallic

Atlas is much darker then Meteor. Hard to tell from a picture which it is. Look for a sticker that has those types of codes on them.

Like you said, Atlas is much darker than Meteor but Slate is similar to Meteor, at least to my eyes. Don't know the code for Slate though.

Don't forget Seal Gray on 05-06's. Pretty common color that was similar to the later Meteor

Thanks Sandwedge, I didn't realize there was a slate color. Site I referenced only had those two colors that looked close and a third one that seemed too dark - 7A1 Gray Black. I went the lazy route and pulled the codes and color names from the Dr. Colorchip site so my list is by no means comprehensive

Color code is also stamped on a label inside the gas filler cover.

I should be able to look it up by VIN number, what's your VIN?

The 997 series has no 'sticker' on the inside hood. Color is found on the fuel filler flap (sticker) or sometimes on the door jam, near the air pressure sticker. Sadly, the VIN number may not help you--if it is a PTS car (doubtful) it will only be recorded as PTS.

The VIN can be used to pull the build sheet which shows the paint code and name. But as stated earlier, if it's paint to sample then that's probably all it will show.

Edgy, my 997 has an options sticker under the hood.

I just looked, there is a black sticker under the hood, but no option codes on it. The color code is on the gas filler flap as others had stated.

I guess Porsche got creative with how they placed these stickers on the cars because my 05 997S has only this sticker under the center of the hood with the VIN, engine & tranny codes, all of the options my car came with, and the interior & exterior paint codes. I would've expected every car to have one of these:

Every car does have one of this stickers...it's just a challenge to find it. I believe starting with the 997 the sticker was no longer placed under the hood at the factory but was delivered loose so dealer could attach it to a designated page in the maintenance manual. Some dealers were old school and attached to the hood underside, others attached it to the maintenance book and others (most) did nothing and left it loose.
