Would a cigarette lighter USB charger that is not plugged into a device run the battery down if plugged into the passenger footwell? I think it has a status LED, but otherwise, if not plugged into the phone, I can't imagine there is much of a current draw.

the console/footwell are a 7.5a fuse... I think it's position 8 or 9.

And....if one uses the battery charger over the wintertime, instructions say
use the cig. lighter .
Followed these directions last winter with no trouble come this spring.

Actually, I'm just kidding since I am in the same place as you. Why would it not be OK to use the cigarette lighter (the one in the center console ashtray) to charge an iPhone, etc. as the OP said in his original post? If this is the outlet than can handle the highest load, why would a measly cell phone be a problem?

Any of the outlets could be used to charge an iphone since the draw would be considerably less than the fuse (I think someone mentioned 7.5 A). It seems most of the comments about which to use seem to imply the two low current outlets are switched so you can't drain the battery when the car is shut off. In my car (05), none of the 3 outlets are switched so it wouldn't matter. Turn the key off, put the key in my pocket and any device plugged into those outlets still has power to it. Maybe at some point in later MY cars, Porsche changed that.

Before I hardwired my CTEK 3300 https://rennlist.com/forums/997-foru...rger-lead.html, I was charging via the cig lighter. No issues. It's easier to access than the passenger foot well power source.

For the 997.2 There are two fuses of interest:

Row A, F8, 12 volt sockets, 7.5 amps (ganged to F7 Rear Control 15 amps)
Row A, F10, cig lighter, 15 amps

Cig Lighter and the passengers power source in the foot well are hot 100% of the time.

I'm not sure what "12 volt sockets" is referring to. Anyone? I may just pull the fuse and see if the passenger foot well source remains hot.

When the manual section was written, it is possible that Porsche intended to have outlets that were switched and non-switched.

When all was said and done, they wound up having all outlets non-switched.

I have known someone for years who writes and edits owner's manuals for everything from cars to washing machines. Errors are always going to print.

There should be a thread here about inconsistencies in the manual.

As for instructions in the car that seem wrong: Sometimes it's not a technical limitation, but hedging against litiigation: Let's keep wires and devices that would be used while driving away from the driver/shifter. "Hey, use this socket just for stuff you use when you're broken down."

Thanks to all for the info. I think Philster hit it: the notice to not charge items in the cig lighter seems to be more of a "safety" issue (keep wires away from the shifter) than an engineering limitation.

Unless you have an Escort 9500 or something like that shuts itself off after an hour or 2 of no gps position change. Of course if you are unsure then you should of course turn it off or just pull the plug from lighter socket when parking car.

In the Porsche Sports Cars manufactured to date,the Cigarette lighter was the only option for connecting additional electrical devices to the power supply.
These" device adapters" may permanently deform the bimetal in the cigar lighter and may even "blow" the internal fuses.

So then what are the power outlets in the footwell and underneath the armrest in the center console used for if the cigarette lighter "is the only option for connecting additional electrical devices to the power supply?"

I have used both the cig. lighter socket and the passenger well socket interchangeably just as a test, for plugging in the Porsche battery tender when parking the car for longer periods of time (couple of months) without any problem. No fuses got blown, and the battery tender went to green light status, indicating fully charged. I now use only the passenger well socket for this purpose, as obviously the battery tender draws very little current, so it's fine there.
I also have my Bluetooth phone always plugged into the socket in the armrest - it does not take long to charge the phone up, and once it's fully charged, the phone goes into trickle charge mode, and has never discharged the battery, even if I leave the phone there for several days.
