I've used an Add-A-Fuse or equivalent to tap cleanly into the fuse box without splicing into any car wiring. It is available at most auto parts stores and looks like the attached photo.

Like the previous post states, remove the screws holding in the carpeted panel around the fuse box (you'll find the philips screws behind the removable fuse box door). There is a unused space near the fuse box puller (yellow) where you can pass your radar detector wire through, you may have to fish a wire through from the outside, tape it to your detector wire, then pull the detector wire through. Splice it onto the add-a-fuse and plug the add-a-fuse into one of the unused switched spots on your fuse box (there is one normally available but I forget where it is, I'll look when I get home). Behind the carpeted panel you'll also find a screw that is grounded to the chassis (to the lower left of the fuse box, painted the same color as the car) that you can use for the ground.

Actually I found my previous post where you can see more photos and better instructions. Look at post #9 at https://rennlist.com/forums/997-foru...-detector.html

Thanks guys for the details, Storm your photos help a lot. I need to pick up a direct wire kit from Escort as I don't have it yet, I've done this before in my old Audi so things look very similar.

Are most of you guys running yours next the the driver's pillar? Given I have a cab, I want to give the detector the best rear viability I can so I was thinking of a mirror mount.

a normal telephone wire with jack works just fine on most Escorts, if you don't use the remote control. Just identify the 2 color wires needed.
not to difficult to tap into overhead light assembly, for power.

In the photo I showed in the post I linked to above, you can see I used a 10 amp (red) fuse that I happened to have laying around, which should protect the car just fine if somehow the wire gets pinched and shorted. Ideally, you could get by with as little as a 2 amp fuse (gray) for the detector.

If you need to get things up and running without another trip to the store to buy another fuse right away, you can see in the photo several spare fuses sitting up at the top left of the fusebox. Of course, these are intended as backups in case you ever blow one so if you borrow one you should consider replacing it. I've never used one of the spares in any car I've ever owned though.

Gibby, what solution did you end up using to keep the wire in place?

I actually just finished installing the radar today. I used some fuel line and put the cord inside, this allowed it to tuck up nicely in the headliner. I also used an add a fuse, this seems to be the best solution which can be easily removed

Congrats! It's good to hear you got it done cleanly.

Without referring to the OM (or looking at my car,) I assume these are ATM style fuses for add a circuits? I'm going to go ahead and order the stuff for preparation for next weekend, the dangling cord has got to go.

I think they make the Add-A-Fuses in both of the common sizes. The P-car ones are the larger size. It's easy to open the fuse box door and remove one of the spares from the upper left corner to use as a size reference.

Just checked, seems ATC size is what the 997's take which is the 'common' size.

Hey gibby- Where did you find a mount that attaches to the rear view mirror? I've been looking for one and they all say they are not compatible with 911s.
