I had one my cars keyed(luckily none of the P cars) in a parking lot where I park sometimes for business.
I was wondering...and please excuse my SF way of thinking...does anyone know of a camera, small enough to be installed under the mirror or someplace where it would have a 360 degrees view? I'm thinking of something with a small motor that would allow it to spin 360 degrees based on inputs from a motion sensor.
I know it sounds pretty crazy, but ideally it would only start recording when someone approaches the car so that it doesn't drain the battery,if left overnight.
There are dozen of manufactures, styles, sizes, prices.
Auto record, motion activated, built in lcd etc.
To get a sampling, go to eBay and put in "dash cam".
Unless you have a proximity security system, the camera won't detect minor contact such as a key to a door I would assume. I'm guessing parking in a 'safer' location might be a better option for you which may have exposure to cameras in the area or security in terms of keeping the riff-raff out.
Good suggestion to go look on EBay. There are plenty options, some of them are quite cheap. Still would appreciate suggestions of a particular set up that has worked for someone... I believe this can prove quite useful in other cases as well. For instance,God forbid you get in an accident or get pulled over. It can work for you.
FWIW,I heard in Russia dash cams are mandatory to have and required by all insurance companies. Plenty of videos on YouTube to support my statement.
I can only think of s a radar based alarm system that would turn on a recording device of some type when the outer perimeter is breached.
997's already have a radar under the centre console but its only for interior protection.
Back in the day, Alpine had a inner/outer radar bubble. If you breached the outer, it wold chirp 4 time to warn you off. Something like this might be the answer if it could be configure to turn on a camera.
Just because you can capture the image doesn't mean you can get an identity. ...and if you do, the kind of scumbags who key cars may not have any assets or insurance with which to make you whole.
Of course!
But it would sure feel good to see their faces, wouldn't it?
I had my new Porsche keyed in Heidelberg within 2 days of picking it up at the factory. You have to remember that there are many unsavory individuals out there who are of such a low opinion of themselves that they have to resort to such destruction to feel good about themselves. Where you have the upper hand is (1) you own the Porsche and (2) it can definitely be repaired to perfection. I waited (at Porsche's AG's advice) until the car was back in the USA to have it fixed and it was done perfectly by my local shop, who actually took the door off to do it right, and not contaminate the rest of the car's finish with the potential for overspray.
The problem with any sort of camera today is that the imagery is often highly pixellated to the point that identification is nearly impossible, at best. Second, making a case is difficult. Obviously, the key here is to have the camera(s) very visible and obvious to the potential wrong-doer so that they think that they are on camera and will chose another easier car to mess with to get their satisfaction.
It's really sad that we have such people in this world. You should consider yourself lucky that you're not in the UK. Most of the vandalism reports we saw here on Rennlist were from our UK friends who had mirrors broken off, and serious keying done--and worse!
