Prices will continue to decline gradually I think.
But at about 15 years of age, I thin they'll stabilize and start heading the other way like those before them.

993's were last of the air cooled.
997's are the last of the direct steering.

I'm incline to think they will continue to decline even post 15 years. Many factors such as:

No shortage of supply, the amount of 997s produced was far more than say any air-cooled generation.

991s will depreciate, this will affect 997 pricing. One day a 991S will be going for sub $50K, you can only imagine what a 997 will be valued at, and it's not likely a used 997 will be valued greater than a 991. This isn't going to be a repeat of say 993 vs 996 story.

No direct steering, but reviews on the GT3 steering is overall positive. Apparently it could be as simple as a software update, so transferring this to the regular 991s doesn't sound unreasonable.

Of course most of this doesn't apply to GT models, with a limited production run and last of many things (6 speed, Mezger), these will possibly start appreciating post 15 years or even sooner.

The smart buy right now is any 993 TT and hold it. Or any of the other limited production Carrera S or C4S 993 cars.

997's are depreciating as there's a ton out there.

991's will depreciate as they aren't moving off the lots as quickly as Porsche wants. There seems to be a increasing number of leases happening (a result of a stupidly high retail?).

imo that applies for 85% of new, luxury branded cars, not just 911.

the 'afford the monthly payment' way of thinking has helped car manufacturers to move more inventory then ever.

I believe 2009 and 2010 were the lowest number of total 911's sold in quite some time. How do these low production numbers figure into things?

No doubt. Especially in OUR area! KC is the worst place in the world to shop for a P car. There just aren't any! Don't know how many miles are on your car Mark, but there are VERY few if any 997.2 C2S cars for much less than $60k even now over the dead of winter, that's nationwide. It's really weird. I'm sure there are a few cases, but even the aggressive dealers like Park Place in Dallas, their 30k mile 997.2's are north of $60k when they have them. Aristocrat has a rough '10 with 12k miles and they've "reduced" it $73k...stupid price. In my shopping for an 09 or newer in the last 18 months I've seen prices actually go UP on those cars. I felt fortunate to get the pristine car I got from a private party for $61,900. Really even the 997.1 cars have held up in that time frame, if not gone up slightly. A buddy shopping for a 996 GT3...wow. Could have bought a nice 05 18 months ago for $50k with 25k miles. Now they're almost non existent, 50k miles and asking north of $60k. Talk about missing the boat.

Yes, the 2009, 2010s have actually gone up. I can't believe it. I am currently helping a friend buy a lower mileage 2009-2010 and I gave him some bad advice a few months ago. He found what we now know to be a good deal 2010 C4S Cab for about $61K and I waved him off. I purchased a 2009 C2S with 24K miles for $53K last Jan 31st (12 months ago). I can't believe these current, mid-winter prices.

I won't post what we know because he is about to pop an offer, but there is absolutely nothing (997.2) we saw under $60K sub 30K miles and we have been looking for 4 months.

Peace

So what's the take home message here? If you want a "classic" 911 to admire and drive occasionally buy a 993 or older; but the 997s and 991s, they made/are making so many of them that the best thing to do is drive and enjoy them because you're never going to get your money back? Maybe I'm just in the minority but the money I spent on my GTS I consider gone. It's not a "more money than sense" mentality, it's just a 997 or 991 is an indulgence and not an investment so for me I drive my car, enjoy it and I don't care if it appreciates or depreciates.

Guys 997.2 pricing won't last with 991's priced like this (2013 w/15k miles for $69k):

Unless of course enough purists continue to upgrade from 993's or 996's to such.

Exactly why my 997 is a daily driver in all seasons. I consider it lost money now so I'd better enjoy it!

Considering that the price new was about $84K (if this is a base car) it seems closer to standard depreciation.

While I recently paid more than this for a 2010 Targa 4S, the sticker on that car was $123K (and I considered it a very good deal from a private seller for an 11K mile car)

This car has a bad carfax, albeit "minor damage". I have no problem with this and therefore I think this is a great deal. Most 2013s on Autotrader are going for $130K!!!!!

I don't know what to make of this one, but I doubt this one car with a bad carfax will drive the rest of the used market.

Maybe the used market is rising because of two factors:

1 - New prices are getting stupidly high
2 - 2009 and 2010 just didn't produce many cars and therefore the used inventory is just low... fewer cars, rising demand equals higher prices.

Peace

i agree completely. i find it somewhat crazy when i see my buddies who dump 80k cash on their 911, then a few months later are trying to work the numbers re resale + taxes when they may need to sell.

these cars are still in production and are made in abundance. hence these things depreciate heavily.

wait till springtime when everyone puts their car on the market, i think thats when a more fair assessment of true 'what-it-sells-for' pricing can be seen.

I kinda think that some day my manual transmission 997.1 may be worth more than a PDK 991, One never knows what drives the purist mind. Some still think air cooled is a big wow factor
