My 07 C2S did this exact same thing a few months back. Only did it once and never again. I check the engine oil level HOT after driving the car, on level ground. It has always been at the "max" mark or one notch below. The motor used a pint over 3K miles - not bad for a car with 63K miles on it.
Be careful adding oil - it takes very little to overfill (level showing above MAX).

I do not know about the 2010 ( 997.2) but on my 2008, I simply turn the ignition to on/start without pushing the clutch pedal and it shows the oil level in a few seconds.

Still says check oil level, now my oil pressure gauge reads zero. Am I overfilled?

If your oil pressure gauge reads zero it is time to call the tow truck.

another problem is that I have had the car for a week and never noticed the oil pressure reading before because it is obscured by the steering wheel. So, not sure how long this has been going on / how much damage may be done.

Hopefully it's the sender unit or something. Either way there goes my Saturday drive in my NEW car!

"Obscured by the steering wheel" - I wouldn't even let my wife use that excuse.

I would definetaly have it checked by a Porsche technician before turning that key again. Oil pressure and temperature are the most important gauges to be aware of. Keep us posted.

Your engine would not go too far with zero oil pressure so I'd guess there is a fault in the gauge or sending unit.

Also oil levels vary a lot especially if you don't drive your car long enough to burn off all of the water vapor in the crankcase. It will collect after short runs and show higher oil level readings. I'd take a long drive before draining any oil. Good luck.

Your oil level is full. Fine. Don't sweat it. It's not that high to be a problem.

You clearly are not current on all the the "911" engines. The 996 and 997.1 cars are not dry sump in the conventional sense--they must be tested with the engine OFF. The 997.2 engines return to the days of checking it with the engine running.

Page 136 of owner's manual is very clear. 1. Car is Level (horizontal), 2. Engine is off, 3. Ignition ON. The duration is 6 seconds unless the engine has been running, then it can take several minutes. From top mark to bottom mark it is 1.2 Liters (a quart is .95L) so slightly more than a quart. If above the top mark (you have no idea how much overfilled it is) it must be drained down to top mark. If bottom segment flashes, the oil level has dropped below the minimum mark. Add oil immediately! No mention of flashing when overfilled. The oil level is automatically measured during refueling if certain parameters are met and will show up when you first start the car. This is important stuff guys. Don't be a dipstick! No pun intended. This is for 997.1 cars.
