I like the C63 a lot, but I bought an S4 for a daily (my 997 is my long-term keeper).

M3. Love mine.

Last model year of the current M3 so they've had plenty of time to work out the kinks. I wouldn't wait until next year because the first model year can be dodgy sometimes with issues appearing that are annoying.

The M3 is meant to be both practical and sporty. There's nothing wrong with more mellow performance in the low RPM's, as far as I'm concerned. The high revving engine is music to the ears on the entire latter half of the RPM range. Plus, it's as fast as a 997 yet it's a saloon... and faster than most versions of the Panamera.

My brother has a 2010 (or 2011) C63. It has been really good for him. I liked it as well, though I have only driven it a few times. For a DD it seems to cruise well, yet give you some fun when you want it. Also, I will never buy another BMW. I previously had an E60 M5 that seemed to have a problem constantly. I owned it for about 16 months and it was in the shop 12 times, all for different reasons. The car was under warranty and fixed for free each time, but very disappointing from a "flagship" car.

The E90 or E92 M3 would be my choice, but it's near the end of it's production so if you may want to wait if you are buying new. Alternatively, a bog-standard current-gen F30 335i would be cheaper and with a 5.1s 0-60mph is plenty for commuting.
The 335is is an absolute blast to dive. Major torque and I easily prefer it over the M3.
