In a predicament right now... Trying to figure out which to buy. I've had a couple of 996s already 99 and 02 both c2. I was on the way to picking up an 02 996 turbo (50k miles) and I ran across a 997.1 c4s (45k miles) in terms of price the two are pretty close to eachother. Now trying to figure out which to pick. I like of course the newer/updates of the 997 but the boost is nice as well. If I pick up the 997 the I*S on the m96 will always be an issue (but could still get a warranty) and on the turbo (coolant lines, spoiler, clutch slave) has a few things that could also go wrong. Boost is always nice. Anyone out there go from a 996 tt to a 997? Any feedback would help. Have driven both, turbos are nice but the nice interior of the 997 is not bad at all. Dang it... If I could just afford the 997tt then all my problems would be solved...

Tough Choice, I am assuming by your post it is a 997.1. As much as I can not stand the 996 headlights for some reason I think they look much better on the TT. People say the 2006 and Newer are less prone to IMS. I would drive both, that might make the decision for you. I would probably go 997, but it would depend on driving them as well as options and condition.
I am not sure there is a wrong decision here.
Good Luck

Ok, so I have been in your shoes. I has a coupe of 996 c2's. and last year I got an 02 996tt x50 with 70k miles. I loved that car. Well, it didn't last long, got in a wreck in dec. broke my wrist, totaled the cat and had surgery. Fast forward to two weeks ago, I picked up 06 C4S. I missssss the turbo. The boost is INCREDIBLE. The C4s is more. crisp especially in sport mode. The gear box on the 997 is better so is the look a s interior but if I had to do it again I would go for the tt with x50. Good luck. If u want more info just pm me.

Funny, I have an '07 C4s x51 and my buddy has an '04 TT. Last night we were in his TT and I drove it back after a beer. That hydraulic clutch is sweet, that boost is addicting! Turbo is the way to go! Maybe wait and save, get an '07 TT as the prices are coming down! Good luck. I might be right behind you!

Well, looks like even the 997 guys say go 996tt... I sure am happy with my decision! (for reference, I posted this same exact thread in the 996 forum and everyone said 996tt all the way!)

You can get into a pretty nice 997.2 now for low 50's. DFI engine with no IMS. If I was you I would add that to my list of possibilities.

avoid 997.1 cars if u can, you will be happier with new 997.2 DFI engine than with M97/M96.
as of 996 tt or 996 gt3 - it is up to you, both cars are good and will last long enough.
but stay away from 996 and 997.1 street cars, or you will eventually have to deal with engine issues most likely.

By all means, buy the newest you can afford, but you don't have to avoid 997.1 cars because of the (rare) chance of engine issues. Every model has issues, some worse than others. Sure, I'm concerned about RMS and IMS problems; but I drive the car as it was intended to be driven, I listen to it, I inspect the engine and keep fluids topped up (and ensure it has regular oil changes). Oh ya, I thoroughly enjoy my 997.1 and don't let the issues (rare as they are) worry me. Perform due diligence and get the newest you can afford.
As for the choice presented you - you're going to have to test drive each variant to see which one "talks" to you. Do you like the way the Turbo looks and sounds? You've got to like those acceleration numbers? Or, like me, to you dislike spoilers and holes in the bodywork...and prefer the sound of the naturally aspirated engine better? It's kind of a nice "problem" to have, but only you can decide.

I think this is a tough choice. Boost and speed with the 996 TT or the more traditional looks of the 997.1 C4S. I have a 2008 C4S and love it...but I wish I would have spent the extra bucks and gone with a 2007 or 2008 997 TT . The boost is intoxicating! I'm also a proponent of buying the newest model you can afford. Too bad my wife feels differently.

I'm a looks and refinement guy so the 997 is what speaks to me.
If you must have the power of a Turbo then go the 996 TT. I can't get over the looks of the front end of the 996 and don't like the first modern interior of the 911 so for me the 997 takes it hands down.
I've only got a lowly 997 Carrera 4 and I think its plenty quick.
