Actually, I test drove a new Boxster S and a new '12 GTS cab, and guess which one I wrote the check for?

Add to this the fact that, IMO, the classic 911 shape just makes for a better looking car than the Cayman or Boxster, and the choice for me is clear.

I owned a 987 Boxster S for 2 years and it was a great driving car. It just wasn't a 911 and I found myself not bothering to look back and admire it every time I walked away. I probably was spoiled by 20 years of prior 911 ownership going back to my 3.2 Carrera, but a sports car should be about emotion and the 911 inspires more of it. Just my $.02.
Well said Mike. I'll share a little OT story from Friday heading north through Topanga Canyon heading to the valley (so cal folks know this road well.) I found myself behind a brand new boxster. They've really improved the style of the car from the rear. He had slow traffic in front of him, so there was little fun to be had. He certainly noted me behind him, and began to sag back to give himself room to play. The boxster handled the curves very well, with no detectable lean and I chased him through the corners only to be slowed by the traffic ahead. We played this game going up and over the summit. As you reach the bottom of the decent, the single lane becomes two, enabling a pass with no traffic ahead. We both prepared for what was coming ... A quick downshift and we were on the gas, (i hear my wife mutter "oh ****" he stayed right, I went left and i was shocked at how quickly I passed him like he was standing still. He caught me at the light, honked and gave a big thumbs up and he was all smiles. With the top down, he got the full effect of my PSE at WOT...and had a beautiful view of my nice fat ***. A combo that can't be beat.

The Boxster is nice in the curves, but my 997.2 GTS is a no compromises beast. A Cayman (Boxster) better than a 911? No f'ing way.

I actually agree with most of this article, but it only applies to the new gen. There was no competition in the past gen cars, but in this latest iteration they improved Cayman/Boxster much more than 911 and if I was in the market for a brand new sports car, Cayman takes the cake.

At a recent PCA event I had the chance to check out side by side the 991 and new Cayman S. Didn't get to drive so this is based on appearance only. Frankly the Cayman looks more like a sports car than the 991. Porsche did a great job with it, very exotic looking. The side air intakes look nice, headlights, etc. It looks "right sized" as a sports car.

I think the 991 looks more like a GT car than a sports car, sitting next to the Cayman it's very apparent. Don't get me wrong, the 991 is beautiful, but when I see it now I think it's competing with the Maserati Gran Turismio, and Aston Martin's.

BTW the sticker on the Cayman S was $79k and the 991s was $127k. I know this doesn't matter to some of you but for that $48k difference I could also get a 2011-12 Cayenne for running errands and hauling the kids. My current wish car is a 997 GTS, but if I was shopping for a new car I'd want a Cayman S over a 991.

$689/MONTH FOR 27 MONTHS. $0 DUE AT SIGNING at my dealer. In terms of looks the Cayman looks exotic and the 911 looks like a 911. I was driving my 997 and my bro-in-law was driving the Cayman S back to the dealer. I was in front, on the side, and behind it. It looks exotic. Porsche did well when they designed the new Boxster/Cayman. I can definitely see myself in one.

That's an excellent deal actually. That's for a base model? What state are you in?

I totally agree, I found the same at the dealer when they had two side-by-side, 991 is definitely more GT and targeted to buyers of Aston, Maserati, M3/M5, AMG, RS cars, etc... Even my sales guy said the same that many buyers have noticed the same and have mentioned their dislike of 991, while Cayman/Boxster are now a lot more attractive.

Also, the new pricing on 991, specially the options just make it ridiculously expensive, a medium optioned Carrera S now costs as GT3! Doesn't make any sense.
