40,000 mile service - dealer or independent?

My 2007 C2S has 31,000 miles and in need (I'm told) of its 4 yr 40,000 miles service. There's 8 months left on my CPO, and I'd intended to stick to the dealer while it is under CPO because problems they might find could be covered, and so I would expect them to be motivated to ID any issues. However, the price for the service is really steep. Any issue using independent shop while under CPO, in terms of maintaining warranty validity? I'd still get one last dealer visit say in 6 months for oil change, to generally check things out. Any thoughts welcome.

Reread your manual and you will find that the 40,000 service is very little.
What do they propose to charge you for this service?
Here's what the 40,000 miles service calls for:
Change the oil and oil filter
Replace the air filter
Replace the cabin air filter (particle filter)
Check underside for leaks and such, like hose condition, etc.
That's hardly a "major service." Any independent can do a service and it will not impact the warranty.

Thanks Dan. I did read the manual, and I noted that many things are to be 'visually inspected' but not all that much replaced except oil and various filters - which is why I was mystified by the price quoted, $1,950. Thanks for the comfort re the warranty. I'm going to try out an independent shop. It dawns on me that if the independent shop identifies some non-wear item or issue that needs to be addressed, I can bring it to the dealer to do under CPO before expiration.

My dealer recommended plug replacement at the 40,000 mile service due to the age of my car (2005). The SA quoted me $1400. I found an independent mechanic who, by coincidence, turned out to be a former wrench for Porsche, and he quoted me just under $1000 for the service, plus plugs AND 6 new ignition coils (3 were cracked, 3 were "tired"). Needless to say, I went with my indie guy and saved a bunch of money.
Hope this helps,
Pete

I'm also on the fence with my 4 yr service to my 6k odometer reading 09 c2s.
Local P dealer wants 1695 inc tax, includes new plugs. Not sure if I should change the plugs or not ?

Ultimately you will do what you are most comfortable with. Many would prefer to pay the exuberant pricing at the dealership as "insurance" that if anything major goes wrong the CPO'ed repair does not come into question.
I was one of those intially. I have owned many CPO'ed Porsches and Mercedes. I now do all my own service or use an Indy while under CPO and keep excellent records.

Doesn't it also need the brake fluid changed at 4 years? I thought that was every 2 years, maybe it is different on the 997.1. That would add a couple hundred at least.
Hopefully my dealer doesn't rip me off, I am intending to use them until my CPO runs out, but not if they rob me like this.
Good luck, keep us updated.

I would wait another 8 months and then do the service just before the CPO expires. The dealer will be motivated to find things that are covered under warranty. Change the oil now if it's been a year. dave

$1950 is highway robbery. They'e just not holding a gun to your head.
Parts add up to about $150--tops. Adding oil and tossing it on the rack for inspections underneath add little time to the job. However, the advantage of a regular dealer is if they see a lot of 997 cars, they know what to look for (things that are known to be problem things that might loosen up from the factory).
It all depends upon the shops. Some indy shops may be more familiar than the PCNA guys.

$1,950 is a scam, RUN.
Your warranty situation makes it tricky though.
In that case I would drive to another dealer even if I had to pay for a full tank of gas it would be worth it out of principle.

My local Porsche Dealer in Newport Beach CA charges $990 for an oil and filter change. Sure they do the 40 some point inspection but still outrageous. The coffee, cookies and car wash are great but still outrageous.
My Indy charges $290 but without coffee, cookies and wash. But he takes me into the shop while the oil is draining and shows me the underside of the car, explains a lot of stuff and answers all my questions.

I think a lot of this boils down to your dealer/indy. For me I'll take mine to Porsche of the Village in Cincinnati any day. I've been in other locations where I would go with an indy. BTW, I can't imagine being presented a $1950 bill for a 40k service.

Having a mechanic show you the car while its on jacks is well worth it-I'd buy your mechanic coffee and donuts so I could ask away. Mine charges $175 for oil changes, but I have since done them on my own along with the plugs, air filters and brake fluid. I enjoy working on it. Also removed and installed modified mufflers. My next task is the water pump, belts and coolant (possibly 3rd radiator).
