40,000 mile service - dealer or independent?
#31
I'm trying to build a relationship with my only P dealer in the area. I could drive to Detriot in 2+hrs each way and save $ 3-400.00 but hen I have to be there all day.
My cost of 1695 didn't include brake flush.......another 175

Correction: I looked at the invoice, and the Indy shop DID replace the spark plugs, so we're talking $889 instead of the dealer price of $1950, for the same major service. Plugs, fluids, filters, accounted for $457 of the price. I'm a convert.

What everyone doesn't realize is that everything is negotiable. Some do a lot of home work and negotiate a great deal when purchasing their car, but pay whatever the service department charges. Before I have any service conducted I always reach out to the service manager, not the service writer, and negotiate a discount with him. Prior to my 4 year service for example, I was quoted $950 by the service writter, but was able to get that price reduced to $640 after talking to the service manager.
I have no idea if every dealer will negotiate their listed service prices, but it doesn't hurt to try. I have always had my Porsches serviced at dealerships, and my loyalty has been repaid by them since they were my advocates when I sought "good will" repairs. Over the past 19 years there were three instances of my seeking "good will" repairs, and in each case Porsche agreed. Now maybe Porsche would have made the gratis out of warranty repairs without my dealer's intervention, but I certainly appreciated the dealer's advocacy in my behalf.

Checked with the two Porsche dealers in the Atlanta area, both quoted 40K service including plugs at $660. If pollen and air filters need replacing the cost could be up to $800.

I have no idea how you got that price. I just took my base Carrera in for 40k service today @ Hennessy Porsche, quoted $1430 before PCA discount. Jim Ellis was in the same ball park around $1400. This does include plugs. No idea how you got a quote less than $700.....am I just getting robbed?

$1400 was my quote here in Northern CA (Marin County). I figure I'll do it myself, although I am debating the plugs. I'm not sure if after five years some of the manifold bolts may break. I'm not sure if I want to deal with drilling out studs on this car.
The quote at half that sounds pretty cheap. I could bite on that offer.

You would think Atlanta should be a bit cheaper than CA...I guess not!
The only reason I'm using the dealer is because my car is still under CPO and I'm hoping this will help if my car have any problems immediately after CPO expires and the dealership might still be willing to take care of me. I doubt it but worth a try. Otherwise, I'm sure an indy can perform all of this for under $1000.
I got a Cayenne loaner for the weekend. Now can't wait to get my car back. It doesn't excite me the slightest. Well, at least I bought a christmas tree (artificial) and the SUV helped shipping it home.

I would do the oil and inspection at the dealer, to keep your warranty and proof of service. Get your other parts done by an indy, or change the filters yourself. Suncoast has what you need. 2 days and a few clicks away.
Also dealer recommendations and what your owners manual says, do not have to match. The dealer can have whatever schedule they want.
I remember reading this in Car and driver mag. http://blog.caranddriver.com/service...-service-desk/

Last month my wife's Audi was at the collection for service and their quote for a front brake job was about $10 less than another local Indy I called. Goes to show, you don't ever know.....

Be careful with the Collection and for that matter any other dealer. My car was there last week and they returned it with some minor scratches on the leather and full of grease marks. It was there for some CPO warranty work. Once the warranty is over I will be taking it to William at Svoboda Motorsports located in Medley.

My local dealer in St. Petersburg wants $425 for plug installation including plugs. Seems decent.
