Default not sure what saved my *** "literally", but....

Went on a nice run today with another 997.2 and a 991. Weather temp was 43 degrees and roads were clear, other than left over salt dust. I have 6k on the clock and original "summer" rubber, that has plenty of treawear left. For all you fair weathered softies, the dust is what is left over from crystals that have been pulverised from traffic volume. I was in 3rd at 6k on the tach under full throttle, going around a bend in the road. While under full throttle, I felt the "***" kick out, but as I stayed in the throttle, it immediately corrected itself. Not sure if the traction control kicked in or if keeping the hammer down corrected the situatuion, but it was a little unnerving!

Man....I did it once myself. Had the car freak'n sidways more than I was comfortable with because of some dirt that eroded onto the street after some storm and it was right in the apex of my turn. Thank god for the Porsche stability control because it saved my butt.

Exactly, did you stay in the throttle!? Testament to pure German engineering!

Actually, yes I did stay on the throttle. It was sort of weird and it happened so quick I'm not sure I even had time to let off the throttle. The car just did its thing for a couple nano seconds and then I was like WTF just happened. I was probably going 60 mph too. Had to slow it down after that but you're right man...stability control is amazing.

Um, so you're out on 5-6 year old summer rubber in temps where even the new stuff is gonna be hard. Probably not the best idea to be driving that hard, but I'm glad it all worked out.

Had fun sliding a C63 all over the place today. Some due to salt dust and water, other due to skinny cold tires.

Addicting making the back end come around.

Its cold here in Chicago and the car can get loose. Requires being a bit mindful. PSM is vital.

When its slipperly like this, I get my right hand off the shifter more often and ready two hands on the wheels to make a fast correction when necessary. Keeping the throttle on helps but an early flick of the wheel quickly gets the rear end back in line quickly. These conditions help you learn more about the car but you have to be reasonable.

Light snow and/or freezing drizzle on rising grade on ramps is particulary attention getting. Its like your on a dirt track.

43 degrees is marginal for summer rubber. It's good you left the PSM on.

PSM on a 997 does not stand for 'Porsche Stability Management', it stands for 'Please Save Me'!!! and it did its job.

my rubber just turned 3 in Nov and has 6,200 on them, they are in great shape.

I dont think you quite got his point. Summer rubber is not meant to be out below 7C (45F) in the best of times and even if the tires were brand new, not a great idea to be whipping around a corner in 3rd at 6K. But to each his own and that what the PSM is there for, to try and keep us out of the ditch

I would say it was PSM and a lot of luck, I learned my lesson in my Shelby, almost killed myself and lucky I did not kill anyone else. It was the same, about 40 degree's out, but I have a lot more power than a 911 and I did get out of control.

I learned from it, respect the power and do not be an idiot in the cold with summer tires.

you are right, but even PSM wont save you going too fast in the wrong conditions on the wrong tires......
