origins of cup holder in Pcars
In another lifetime I owned a 914/2 and a 911t. Got married and that was the end of Pcars! Now I have been blessed with the time and resources to go back to my first passion. However along the trail Iv heard stories about the
supposed corporate / cultural battle to bring cup holders to Pcars.....
Does anyone know the real story on this?

Two amusing statements I have heard are: 1) True sports cars don't have cup holders 2) Porsche 911 cup holders are a hidden message from Porsche engineers to Porsche drivers, do not drink and drive.
If you must have them, there are after market units that hang from the left side HVAC vent by the window that work better.

The first true cup holders arrived in the 997.1 cars in 2005. Porsche has long recognized that (1) their largest market share is the USA and (2) Americans take an entirely different view of driving and consider doing other activities while driving, e.g., drinking fluids. As a result, Porsche chose to design into these cars cup holders. However, in line with Porsche engineering, they introduced them in such a way that they were neither invasive nor space/weight factors. Essentially, if you don't want a cup holder, you just never deploy it.

Many people have forgotten step two in the operation of those things!
I also discovered moments ago that there was a sort of a cup holder on the 996 models directly below the central a/c vent for a single cup. So, perhaps Porsche introduced this concept as early as 1999.

The 996 cup holder is primative at best. It was also expensive to replace and it always broke at some point. The 997 cup holder is an improvement. I can't wait to try it with the door closed. I had no idea about step 2.

Oh good. I don't feel as dumb now. The funny thing is that I have wondered since I got the car, why the cover was split into three sections! lol

For those of us who DD our cars, the cup holder need to be there. I of course got the ultimate cup holder since it works much better than the factory one.

I don't like how it places the beverage within striking distance to the PCM. Sounds like a $6k spill waiting to happen.
I never use mine. Wouldn't dare consume food or beverage in that car lol.
