Wave Protocol

Camradarie around a cause (like military service) is one thing...about a piece of steel you drive...different matter.
I don't feel the need to be friendly to everyone. If someone comes up to chat about the car, I won't be a dick, but I'm not inviting them over for drinks either.

I can see the nature vs. nurture mentality to waving. I grew up in rural Missouri where it was perfectly normal for total strangers to wave at each other simply because we happened to be passing each other on the same road and it was the friendly/neighbourly thing to do. I was always left wondering, who was that? lol. I used to ride a motorcycle when I was younger and it was the norm to wave at fellow motorcyclists back then. I was taught from the very beginning of being a Porsche owner that it was customary to wave at a fellow Porsche. Where I'm from they are a rare sight to see. We all have one thing in common and that is the love of the 911. Why not share a simple friendly gesture to express that connection.
I'm moving to Phoenix/Mesa next month and my 997 should be following me within a couple months so I hope to get to see more p-cars on the road. If I see you, I assure you I will wave at you.

If you look at some of the posts on OT and P&C you'll think twice about waving just because someone is driving the same car as you. The last time I gestured toward another driver was when I gave a thumbs-up to a guy driving a pristine '67 (or '68) GT-350.

agreed completely. No child of mine would drive a late model porsche and live in my house.

There are way too many Porsches of all kinds out here to wave at them all! I think it's only the Harley riders that carry on that wave tradition. (although they ignore all other bikes with the possible exception of BMW)
Once I did have a Ferrari driver wave at me when I was in my Boxster Spyder. The only time I have gotten any sort of recognition from one! I'll bet he thought I was driving a Carrera GT!
I have received waves and thumbs up from other Cayman R or Boxster Spyder owners. It's a niche car, so I think they get it.
On the other hand, the R8 gets waves and thumbs up from all sorts of people. It's almost too much! Stupid Iron Man movies. . .

WOW....hard to believe a wave can cause this kind of controversy......I'm glad no one brought up the 991.
I wave almost all of the time and get a wave back most of the time and I personally don't give a sh*t if they wave or not....it's not a big deal one way or another.
The way I feel is that if you have chosen to drive this special car and so have I we have something in common if only just good taste. Just yesterday I was driving towards my street and this gorgeous woman that I've seen before who drives a Meteor C4S Cab pulled out behind me and as I was turning onto my street I put my hand out (no top down) and waved to her (behind me now) and she enthusiastically waved back (top down.....car top I mean).
That brought a smile to my face and brightened my day. Life is short and I personally like the smiles. And Spokane....I'm in NJ so watch those NJ comments!!!
All the best,
Tom

Quad....I sure hope you're not smiling on your driver license photo. I hear it's illegal in New Jersey.
