Is the Carrera S wider?

Yep, he got it right. Not the same as the 993 series and their wide bodies.
997 Targas are also wide body. (duh, they're all 4wd, right?)
Your handling assessment is pretty accurate I'd say, although I've never driven a 4wd model.
4wd has more parts to wear out and break, so a bit of a tip to the 2wd for less possible repairs. Have never heard of the 4wd being prone to problems though.

i'd love to know who is making decisions like the 'wide' vs. 'narrow' issue. with the 993, a 2S is wide (as is a 4S) and a 4 is narrow. with the 997, a 2S is narrow and a 4 is now wide (a 4S happens to still be wide). Now a Targa is wide and always AWD - why?. How about some consistency or are they simply trying to keep us on our toes?

Handling is different between the wider bodies and the narrower bodies due to the added weight introduced with AWD.
Many suggest that the 2WD cars are a bit more 'tossible' because there is less weight to contend with.
Handling between all these models varies--some in little ways, and some in more significant ways.
The latest 997 offerings, the GTS, are the wide body version of the 997, but with only a 2WD drivetrain. It's become extremely popular as the 'exit model' of the 997 line.
