Default PIWIS?

I've been looking for software for 997s and people here recommended Durametric but I don't like the license. It allows only 3 cars on enthusiast kits. It'll be used on 2 cars so that in itself isn't a problem. I figure that to implement the 3 car restriction, software must phone home so Internet connection required (can someone confirm this). I try avoid phone-home software as much as I can.

I see something called PIWIS but the downloads are free so it doesn't sound straight. Can someone clue me in on this?

Anything other than Durametric? I see another thing called Autologic.

I have the Durametric tool. It does not require any phone connection. I appears that the cable/tool itself somehow registers the vehicle's vin# when it is used on a car... perhaps via flash ROM method. Seems to be the go to tool for DIY types. Well worth the price and make sure you purchase from Durametric. Be careful sourcing any from ebay and the like... I discovered during my search that most/all were knock-offs on ebay even though they position them as a "Durametric" tool. Very misleading and not a good solution for obvious reasons including the lack of support from Durametric being the biggest reason for owning such a tool.

From what I've read... PIWIS is the p-dealer diag software/tools from Porsche. Likely requires their expensive diag system/tool to use and not viable for us mortals.

The Durametric cable restricts the number of VIN's based on the version purchased. PIWIS is very expensive - that's why only the top independents have it. Not even sure a casual user can purchase.

i've heard there's a chinese-made knockoff of the Pwiz. unsure how much it is or how reliable...but my bet is on "cheapER" and "not".

The Chinese copy of the Durametric tool typically sells for $100-$200+ on ebay and only allowed for one vehicle. Given no support and questionable functionality it was easy to go with the real thing for ~$250. BTW, I have no affiliation with Durametric but they are great to deal with if/when you need support.

PIWIS (Porsche Tester) is around 30k, and software updates can be a few grand each. Durametric will help with most things. PIWIS is required to recode the car after certain upgrades/addons. For example, activating cdc after installing the Dension requires PIWIS on a non cdc car.

Don't waste your money on aftermarket PIWIS knockoffs....get the Durametric depending on your needs.

Could someone post a quick rundown on what general functions the Durametric Tool is capable of performing? Thanks.

www.durametric.com

There's a section right on the home page titled, "What does it do?"

That might answer your question.

The professional kit allows unlimited VIN numbers.
