2005 ims failure manufacturing dates and the 996
I have a first edition 2005 997 launch vehicle manufactured in march of 04. All the ims remarks I can find pertain to the cars made in early 05. Does anyone know if the 04 is the same design ims as the 05 or is it actually a 996 design? No problems or symptoms just looking to keep on top of things.

As far as the actual design of the bearing changing and how it changed from model year to model year and engine size, maybe these folks could help you out - might be worth investing a phone call:

OR
The flat 6 forum: I would post the question here:

It is both actually. The IMS bearing is the same one (small, single-race) from somewhere in mid-MY2001 until somewhere in mid-MY2005. If there were any changes in the engine from end-run 996 to launch 997 the IMS bearing was not amongst them.

In a few threads toward the beginning of 2012 it was determined (nee speculated with informed guesses) that Porsche switched to an upgraded IMS bearing design in the first few months of 2005. This means that late-year MY2005-and-on cars have the newer kit.
If your car was built in March 2004 (i.e early MY2005), you've got the earlier bearing design.
BTW - March 2004 is WAAAAY early for a MY2005 car. I think we've found that any X year's cars don't begin manufacture until August/September of X-1 year. Strange.

I believe there is some information in this thread on when it is believed there was a change over from the older IMS to the revised IMS. https://rennlist.com/forums/997-foru...tion-date.html
If you are concerned about IMS failure I think the older one is better, as replacing it with one from LN looks to take less work. Can be done while you are getting your clutch replaced. The newer or later run 997.1 S engine requires more work to replace the IMS and up until recently wasn't available.
When I bought my 997 they were going to replace it with one from LN, when they had it opened the IMS was the revised one. At the time LN did not have a replacement option for it. My 997 was assembled in May of 2005

You got the old design, contact LN Engineering, and at next clutch work, replace your IMS.
