What do you think the 991 fixed on the 997.2?

I hope you are not referring to:

- Steering feel
- Pendulum dynamics
- Proper e-brake handle
- Open all-around view
- Airy/open cabin

... which were all changed in the 991.

As always, Porsche makes incremental improvements to the performance of its cars. I still consider myself fortunate to have a 911, even if it is a 2008.

The 991 is generally smoother than the 997. You have to get the speed and the revs up high for it to come alive. I think it's a more engaging car than the 997 at that point. At slower speeds, perhaps the car is too insulating. It's the same story with the steering. Once you're at higher speeds and loads, it works well and it suits the new chassis dynamics. I wouldn't want jiggly 997 steering in a car that turns in as assertively as the 991.

If someone new to Porsche started out with a 991, they'd be thrilled with it. For the rest of us who've driven rougher, harsher, twitchier versions of the 911, we're going to have to work at finding the character in the 991.

I've had the opportunity to drive my 997.2S on the Autobahn at 130+ mph for extended periods. Even with the extra weight of luggage in a full boot, the front end is light and a bit floaty and the twitchiness in the steering that is charming at 35mph is a somewhat less so at really high speed. The improved chassis, longer wheelbase and wider front track, and updated steering should improve this from the tests I've read. We in the US sometimes forget that this really is a German car made for German driving habits. If I spent a lot of time at speed I would welcome the changes.

It's funny, the main reason I left my Corvette Z06's and went to Porsche, I'm on my 4th now, is the "feel" of the car. You had to get the Vette up to speed before it became engaging. Numb, was an often used term when talking about the road feel and feedback provided by the Vette, yet oddly enough here we are talking about the same thing in the 991. I test drove a couple of 991S's and ran them pretty hard. It is a great car but I don't care what you say, right or wrong, it doesn't have the same "feel" as the 997. The rap on the vettes has always been that, yeah, they are fast, but the don't give you the feedback of a Porsche. Is that OK now? Interesting to hear folks like Moody talking about going to a Z06. I am reserving judgement until the next GT3 comes out. That said I am more than happy to bide time with my 12 GTS.

I had a chance to get a good look at the 991 this weekend. I decidedly do not like the extended wheel base. It looks like a 2 door Panamera. I love my 05 997. The car has soul. In the future i would opt for 997.2 turbo or gt3 instead of the new 991.

Mooty is interested in track use. But yeah, you are correct. PAG knows that most people never knew or cared for the Porsche handling, so here is the 991 - a great performer no doubt, but very different from previous generations.

911 owner: "the 911 I happen to own is the last REAL 911. Anything after that has no soul and is basically a cadillac"

356 owner: "whats a 911? surely its not a Porsche because a 356 is the last REAL porsche.

porsche tractor owner: "what the hell are these bloody car things? You want a real porsche, you get a tractor."

haven't we had enough of this? honestly?

dude you drove the one with the boxster engine in a 7 speed. I'll stop right there. Probably didn't even have PASM. The 991 crushes the last 997 Carrera S in everywway. Talking 3.8 to 3.8.

Will someone go get Vern. He loves these threads.

Quadcammer: you will know when guys here have had enough of this subject when these threads stop coming up.

Boolala: once again Buckwheat must point out the obvious to you.

There are many long time Carrera owners that have walked away from the 991 with the same opinion as Palmbeacher. That's fact. I'm one of them.

Do you guys own Porsches? Just curious why these impressions of 997 owners bother you so much.
