Budget $50K - $55K 997C4S or 996TT
I am posting this in the 996 & 997 forums to see if I can get a more balanced view.
With $50K to $55K to spend on a 911 would you buy a 996TT or a 997C4S my preference being for AWD. Pro and Cons please.

Well, how well would a Cab do in your area? If it is very hot and sunny Cabs can only be used at night. But a ride in the cool evening is a sublime pleasure!
Speed is... speed. For some the fun never stops and for others it gets old after a while. You just want to go faster.
I'm a Cab person, so my choice would be obvious. Aesthetics aside.

There are other convenience upgrades and whatnot, but the headlights were a deal killer for me when I was searching for my first 911.

Depends on the condition and options. A highly optioned 996 interior feels richer than your typical 997 interior. Like full leather, carbon console plus other bits, color matched hard backed sport seats, etc. Add the aerokit and the tt looks amazing!
Engine wise, the 997 has the bargain basement unit relative to the tt. Are you a headlight shape guy or engineering "purist"?

996 TT. No question. This is now, in spite of the headlights, a classic 911. It's written up in many places (EVO mag for one) as being a best buy for your buck. I think with the wide hips it looks great and many are well optioned. Performance wise I think it's better and the interior? Love the instrument cluster. And in some areas it's not that far removed from the new 991. If in doubt, compare the door handles. May need to be lowered a bit to make them look really good but that's an easy mod.

If you're gonna waste all that momentum on driving four wheels, you should get a Turbo to offset the difference.
996TT is a performance bargain right now. You can find them, nicely sorted, for far less than 55k.

If you drive them both, you should be able to tell what works for you as they are different animals. The power of the 996TT is addicting and the interior finish is revolting. The 997 has a nicer chassis and interior by far, but is lacking that big kick when the right foot goes down. Only you can make that trade-off. I went 997 when faced with that exact same question 4+ years ago and am very happy.

I personally have a bizarre fixation on the 996TT. I think it's the best looking car ever in the right color combo. So that's what I would do (and what I'm still sort of kicking myself for not doing - but my 997 was not planned...)
There is no right answer. Drive them both and go with whichever you enjoy more.

As far as the choice goes - tough choice. They are so different. I'd probably pick the 997 but then again they are really apples and oranges. The 996TT has a better motor.
