I just saw the 997 GTS side by side with a 991. The 991 looks newer, richer, and more of a GT car. I liked how it looked shorter, but the front end was too big in some weird way.

I have a '08 997, and the car I was drawn to was the 997 GTS. Unlike the 991 it looked more classic 911 - more purpose built. I preferred the slope of the rear window and the smaller front end.

991 is certainly cool, and will continue to improve, but damn - that GTS is going to be a classic......

No I haven't driven one yet, but I'm sure it drives great. My response in this thread is not to put down the 991, just merely to explain why some feel the 991 looks bigger than the mere inch and half or so in length. Posting my pic again, as it illustrates the difference.


I like the looks of the 991 in general, I just wish it wasn't bigger than the 997. I even feel the 997 is bigger than a 911 should be, but at least the 997 retains more of the classic upright look of the air cooled 911s.

Got the chance to see the 991 in person, and as I figured from the pictures I saw of it, there were two things I didn't like (and one new one that didn't stand out in the pictures).

The two things I had seen in pictures that I in fact didn't like in person:

- The "snaggletooth" light/bodywork on the front sides. I just don't like the odd way in which the bodywork meets the light fixture. My eye is immediately drawn to it, and to me it just looks off.

- The center console. Belongs in a Panamera, not in the 911.

The one thing I noticed in person that I hadn't noticed previously in pictures:

- The bug-eyed headlights. They're too rounded. I've read they were trying to bring the curves of the car down into the headlights, but they stick out too much for my taste. I'd prefer the more flat headlights of the 997 series.

I thought I would not care for the rear end, but it ended up not bothering me as much as I thought it would. I actually like the script on the back, which surprised me. I'm not completely sold on the rear spoiler yet, how it's more of a flap that rises up, not the entire unit. But it wouldn't be a deal-breaker for me.

The deal-breaker for me in ever getting a 991 is that snaggletooth light in the front. I just can't get past that. To me, it's just as bad as that train wreck of a trunk design on the BMWs a few years ago (what was it called, the Bangle Butt?). They'd either have to change that, or I'd have to find a really nice aftermarket air dam type unit to replace it with (which would bother me, having to replace something original like that). I'm hoping Porsche changes the style of that part of the front end when they come out with the GT series.

I saw my first 991 (in the wild) yesterday in NYC. Same color as my 08 997.1 S, Meteor Grey. I know the 991s will spank my car in terms of performance, it's an absolute given, but on aesthetics alone, the 991 just looked way too busy. Side profile was fine, but the rear looked bloated and and there were just too many lines on the car, front looked a lot more bug eyed and again too many horizontal lines going on. Some say that the 997 looks very dated compared to the 991 and I think that's true, but that's also one of the reasons I like the simpleton looks of the 997 that much more now after having seen a 991. Now talk to me again once the 991 GT3 is revealed and we'll revisited this discussion when that time comes
